This study examined differences in positive mental health across character strength profiles among 4th– 6th grade elementary students in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province (n=623). Within-person rank scores of character strengths were computed, standardized, and subjected to hierarchical cluster analysis, yielding four distinct clusters: (1) Transcendence–Humanity (high transcendence and humanity; n=150), (2) Wisdom–Humanity Imbalance (high wisdom/intellectual strengths but low humanity; n=118), (3) Temperance (high temperance; n=175), and (4) Justice–Courage (high justice and courage; n=180). Multivariate analyses revealed significant differences in positive mental health across clusters. Specifically, mental well-being was significantly higher in the Justice–Courage cluster compared to other clusters, whereas psychological maladjustment was significantly higher in the Wisdom–Humanity Imbalance cluster. These findings empirically identify naturally occurring virtue-based character strength profiles in elementary students and demonstrate profile-specific differences in positive mental health, providing foundational evidence for strength-based interventions designed to promote students' positive mental health.

본 연구는 서울, 경기도 소재 초등학교 4, 5, 6학년 학생 623명을 대상으로 성격강점 덕목 군집 유형을 탐색하고, 분류된 군집에 따른 긍정적 정신건강의 차이를 분석하고자 하였다. 개인 내적 성격강점 순위 점수를 산출하여 표준화한 후 위계적 군집분석을 실시한 결과 초월 과 인간애가 높은 초월-인간애 유형(150명), 지성이 높고 인간애가 낮은 지성-인간애 불균형 유형(118명), 절제가 현저하게 높은 절제 유형(175명), 정의와 용기가 높은 정의-용기 유형(180 명)의 4개 집단으로 분류되었다. 다변량 분석을 통해 군집별 긍정적 정신건강의 차이를 확인 한 결과 하위요인 중 정서적 안녕감은 정의-용기 유형이 타 군집보다 유의하게 높았고, 심리 적 부적응은 지성-인간애 불균형 유형이 타 군집보다 유의하게 높은 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 자연발생적으로 나타나는 초등학생의 성격강점 군집을 경험적으로 확인하고, 유형에 따 른 긍정적 정신건강의 차이를 밝혀 초등학생의 긍정적 정신건강 증진을 위한 강점 기반 개 입에 유용한 기초자료로 활용될 수 있을 것이다.
