Comics have long been a storytelling medium that has been welcomed primarily by children and youth. In addition, if the reader fails to understand the text due to lack of cultural environment or background knowledge, the comics provide a visual form of concise and unique visual information with the text to help fill the gaps in meaning composition. Therefore, this study tried to verify whether students' novel reading ability is actually improved through the class using cartoon, which is a representative narrative art style today. The research results are as follows; First, as a result of novel class using narrative comics, students' reading ability improved. Second, the short-term one-time narrative comics did not improve the interest in reading novels. Third, as a result of using narrative comics, motivation for reading the original novel was formed. Fourth, the use of narrative comics classes was more effective for male students who love comics, and if applied to this method, it would have a positive educational effect on improving reading ability for various kinds of reading materials including modern novels as well as classical novels. 만화는 오래 전부터 주로 아동이나 청소년들에게 환영받았던 이야기 전달 매체였다. 또한독자가문화적환경이나배경지식의부족으로인해텍스트이 해에 미치지못할경우가발생할경우, 만화는간결하게형상화된특유의 시각 적정보를글과함께제공함으로써의미구성의빈틈을적절히보충할수있게 도와준다. 이에 본 연구는 오늘날 대표적인 서사 예술 양식인 만화를 활용한 수업을 통해 학생들의 소설 읽기 능력이 실제로 신장되는지를 검증해 보고자 하였다. 연구 결과 첫째, 서사 만화를 활용하여 소설 수업을 한 결과 학생들의 소설 읽기능력이향상되었다. 둘째, 짧은기간동안의일회적인서사만화활용수업 방안으로는소설읽기에대한흥미도를향상시킬수는없었다. 셋째, 서사만화 를 활용한 결과 원작 소설 읽기에 대한 동기 부여가 형성되었다. 넷째, 서사 만화 활용 수업은 특히 만화를 좋아하는 남학생들에게 더욱 효과적이었으며, 이 방안을 확대 적용한다면 고전소설뿐만 아니라 현대소설을 비롯한 다양한 종류의 독서 자료에 대한 읽기 능력 향상에 긍정적인 교육적 효과를 거둘 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.
