Exploring the Effect of Reflective Journal on High School Students’ English Writing Performance

The purpose of this study is to review whether a reflective journal which high school students wrote based on the teacher's feedback has positive effects on the improvement of writing skills. Further, the researcher explored students' perception on the reflective journal. The findings were followed. First, students accepted above 90% of the teacher's feedback and modified their essays strictly observing the teacher's direction. Some students recorded the reasons on their refusal of teacher's feedback in the reflective journal. Second, as the sessions progressed, the mean value for writing scores increased, indicating that the journal-writing activity had a statistically positive effect on the changes in writing abilities for students. Third, reflective journal-writing appeared to have a positive effect not only on the writing skills of students but also on the affective attitudes of the students. In particular, students gained the interests and self-confidence in writing as a result of writing of the reflective journal.
