This study examines the translation of the ‘red’ color terms in Dream of the Red Chamber (紅樓夢), comparing the original text with two Korean translations by Choi Yong-cheol & Ko Min-hee (2009) and Hong Sang-hoon (2012). Drawing on Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory and Bassnett’s Cultural Translation Theory, it aims to reveal the structural and cultural characteristics of Chinese color terms and propose effective translation strategies. A total of 112 color terms were identified in the novel, with 34 belonging to the ‘red’ series, accounting for about 30.36% of all color expressions. The ‘red’ terms convey not only visual imagery but also emotions, social hierarchy, and cultural symbolism. The first translation emphasizes literal fidelity, while the second focuses on emotional resonance, each showing different strengths and limitations. This study argues for an integrated translation strategy that balances functional equivalence (reproducing emotional effects) with cultural mediation (supplementing cultural-specific terms). This approach is essential for faithfully reproducing the aesthetic depth and cultural nuances of Dream of the Red Chamber.

본 연구는 『홍루몽(紅樓夢)』의 ‘紅’ 계열 색채어를 대상으로 원문과 두 권의 한국어 번역본의 비교 분석을 통해 구조적 특징과 번역 양상을 규명하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 나아가 유진 나이다(E. Nida)의 기능적 등가 이론과 수잔 바스넷(S. Bassnett)의 문화번역 이론을 적용하여 원문의 미학적·문화적 함의를 효과적으로 재현할 수 있는 번역 전략을 모색하고자 한다. 분석 결과 ‘紅’ 계열 색채어(34종)는 전체 색채어(112종)의 약 30.36%를 차지하며 핵심적 비중을 보였다. ‘紅’, ‘朱’ 등 단일어는 인물의 신분과 품격을, ‘通紅’, ‘飛紅’ 등 상태형용사 결합형은 감정의 동요를, ‘石榴紅’, ‘楊妃色’ 등 사물명사 결합형은 문화적 상징을 강화하는 다층적 기능을 수행하였다. 이것은 ‘紅’ 계열 색채어가 시각적 색상을 넘어 감정, 심리, 사회적 위계를 포괄하는 복합 문화 기호(cultural sign)임을 시사한다. 두 번역본의 대조 분석 결과 직역 중심의 번역(번역본1)은 문화적 함의 전달이 부족했으며 의역 중심의 번역(번역본2)은 색채의 구체성이 약화되는 한계를 보였다. 이에 본 연구는 원문의 정서적 효과(기능적 등가)와 문화적 상징(문화번역)을 동시에 고려하는 통합적 번역 전략을 제안한다.
