The purpose of this study is to explore the psychological experiences and changes undergone by elementary school teachers after encountering the new teacher death incident in Seoul, 2023, also known as the “Seoi elementary school incident.” In-depth interviews were conducted with 10 elementary school teachers from Seoul and Gyeonggi Province between October and November 2023. The collected data were analyzed using a descriptive phenomenological approach. The results yielded 46 key meanings, 17 sub-themes, and 5 major themes. The findings revealed that elementary school teachers, when confronted with the Seoi elementary school incident, tried to “learn more about the incident despite the distress” and experienced “despair toward the teaching profession.” Teachers reported that they “became agents of change together with the teacher community” and demonstrated “introspection and behavioral changes for themselves as teachers and human-beings.” Despite their despair, teachers continued to “harbor affection and hope for the teaching profession” and desired changes in the educational environment. The elementary teachers’ experience with the Seoi elementary school incident can be summarized as “enduring pain and despair while becoming agents of change within the teacher community.” This study is significant as it provides foundational findings for understanding teachers’ psychological experiences through a counseling psychology perspective and supports teacher recovery, growth, and improvements in the educational environment.

이 연구의 목적은 2023년 여름 발생한 서울 신규교사 사망 사건, 이른바 ‘서이초 사건’을 접 한 초등교사들이 어떠한 심리적 경험과 변화를 거쳤는지 탐색하는 것이다. 이를 위해 2023년 10월부터 11월까지 담임교사 경력이 있는 서울․경기지역 초등교사 10명을 대상으로 심층면 담을 실시하고, 서술적 현상학적 접근을 적용하여 내용을 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 46개의 중 심의미, 17개의 소주제, 5개의 대주제가 도출되었다. 서이초 사건을 마주한 초등교사들은 ‘고 통 속에서도 사건을 더 알아가려고’ 하면서, ‘교직에 대한 절망을 경험’한 것으로 보고하였다. 초등교사들은 사건을 겪으며 ‘교사공동체와 함께 변화의 주체가 되는’ 경험을 하였고, 이를 통해 ‘교사이며 한 인간인 나를 위한 고민과 행동변화’를 겪고 있다고 보고하였다. 초등교사 들은 ‘그래도 교직에 대한 애정과 소망을 품고’ 교직의 현실이 변화하기를 바라고 있었다. 이 연구에서 드러난 서이초 사건을 겪은 초등교사 경험의 본질은 ‘고통과 절망을 견디며 교사공 동체 속에서 변화의 주체가 되어 나아감’이다. 이 연구의 결과는 서이초 사건을 접한 초등교 사의 심리적 경험을 상담심리학적 관점을 통해 이해하고, 교사의 회복과 성장, 교직 환경의 변화를 지원하기 위한 경험적 자료를 제공하였다는 점에서 의의가 있다.
