Direction is a concept closely related to everyday life. Therefore learning about direction is a must-have element in elementary school mathematics. Among the contents about direction, the difficulty that students often experience is about discriminating between left and right. In this study, a test was conducted and the results were analyzed to examine the left and right discrimination patterns of the subjects according to the presence or absence of movement and directionality targeting 2nd-grade elementary school students. As a result of the study, it was confirmed that students were not greatly affected by the presence or absence of movement, but by left and right discrimination according to the presence or absence of directionality. In addition, the levels of left and right discrimination were different depending on the students’ responses, varing from level 0 to level 3. Based on the analysis results, several significant implications were derived for teaching the concept of direction.

방향은 우리 생활과 밀접하게 관련 있는 개념으로 이에 대한 학습은 초등 수학에 서 꼭 다루어야 할 요소이다. 방향에 대한 내용 중 학생들이 흔히 겪는 어려움은 좌우 판별에 대한 것이다. 본 연구에서는 초등학교 2학년 학생들을 대상으로 움직 임의 유무, 방향성의 유무에 따른 대상의 좌우 판별 양상을 살펴보기 위해 검사를 실시하고 그 결과를 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 학생들은 움직임의 유무에는 큰 영향 을 받지 않으나 방향성의 유무에 따라 대상의 좌우 판별에 영향을 받는다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한 학생의 반응에 따라 좌우 판별의 수준이 각기 달랐는데 0 수준에서 3수준까지 그 양상이 다양하게 나타났다. 분석 결과를 토대로 방향 지도 와 관련하여 몇 가지 유의미한 시사점을 도출하였다.
