The present research examined whether happiness in elementary school predicts career maturity in middle school by using longitudinal data. The Household Data and Child Welfare Data in Wave 10 (grade 4, 5, 6 in elementary school) and Wave 13(grade 1, 2, 3 in middle school), which are part of the Korean Welfare Panel Study Data, were used for this study. The sample included 373 children (177 boys, 196 girls), which were available in both Wave 10 and 13. A hierarchical regression analysis revealed that happiness in elementary school was a significant predictor of career maturity in middle school, while controlling for age, gender, socioeconomic status, parents’ educational involvement, academic achievement, and career maturity in elementary school. The results highlight the importance of intervening on enhancing children’s happiness in order to facilitate the development of career maturity for children and adolescents. The implications and limitations were also discussed.

본 연구에서는 종단자료를 사용하여 아동기 주관적 행복감이 청소년기 진로성숙도를 예측하 는지를 검증하고자 했다. 이 연구에서는 한국복지패널조사 자료 중 10차년도(초등학교 4,5,6 학년)와 13차년도 가구용 조사와 아동부가조사(중학교 ,2,3학년) 데이터를 사용하였고, 10차년 도와 13차 년도에 모두 존재하는 사례 373명(남 177명, 여 196명)이 분석에 사용되었다. 위계 적 회귀분석 결과, 초등학생 시기의 주관적 행복감은 나이, 성별, 부모의 소득수준, 초등학교 재학 당시 진로성숙도, 부모의 교육 참여, 학업성적을 통제한 상태에서도 중학생 시기 진로 성숙도를 유의하게 예측하는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구결과는 아동 및 청소년들의 진로성숙 도 향상을 위한 상담 및 진로교육에서 학생들의 행복감을 고려할 필요가 있음을 시사한다. 이 연구가 갖는 함의와 제한점 역시 논의되었다.
