The study was to investigate images of labor in elementary social studies textbooks, which would impact students’consciousness of labor meaningfully. Images represented in the textbook can be categorized into two main classes: invisible labor and visible labor. The category of the ‘invisible labor’ includes four images-i) obscured labor by landscapes, products, cultural heritage, and technologies ii) systems working without labor iii) a labor as an unfamiliar everyday life iv) a displaced labor in concepts of economic activity. There are 4 subcategories in the other class, ‘visible labor’, which is classified as i) a simplified labor ii) a split labor iii) a regulated labor iv) a covered labor. Some points are able to be discussed in the light of these findings. First, issues of labor have to be exposed to elementary students for their understanding complicated realities of labor. Second, they should think over small stories-i.e. life, lived experience, and examples- in big pictures. Finally, the purpose of learning labor is to develop sympathetic competency toward sacrifices and sufferings of many workers.

본 연구에서는 초등학생들의 노동 인식에 영향을 미치는 초등학교 사회과 교과서 속의 노동 이미지 들을 분석하였다. 교과서에서 나타난 노동 이미지는 크게 ‘보이지 않는 노동’과 ‘보이는 노동’으로 나뉠 수 있다. ‘보이지 않는 노동’은 ‘경관·생산물·문화유산·기술에 가려진 노동’, ‘노동 없이도 작동되는 시스템’, ‘익숙 한 일상일 수 없는 노동’, ‘경제활동 개념 속에 자리 잃은 노동’의 형태로 나타났다. 노동 관련 내용이 다루어지 는 ‘보이는 노동’은 ‘단순화된 노동’, ‘분리된 노동’, ‘통제된 노동’, ‘은폐된 노동’으로 재현되었다. 분석 결과를 바탕으로 첫째, 초등학생들이 복잡한 노동 현실을 이해하기 위해서는 노동 관련 쟁점에 노출되어야 하며, 둘째, 초등학생들은 노동과 관련된 작은 이야기(생활, 사례 등)를 큰 그림 속에서 궁리해야 하고, 셋째, 노동을 배우는 목적은 우리가 상품과 서비스를 향유할 수 있도록 보이지 않게 노동하는 수많은 노동자들의 희생과 고 통에 감정이입하는 능력을 키우는 것이어야 한다는 점을 생각해볼 수 있었다.
