This study focuses on classifying the offenders who committed the ‘indiscriminate attack’ based on psychological characteristics yielded through psychological assessments and in-depth interview. Twenty-five offenders who caused serious injuries to unknown individuals without a reasonable motive for the attack participated in in-depth interview and psychological assessment. As a result, 16 variables were yielded based on commonly appearing lifestyle and behavioral and psychological characteristics. With those 16 variables, cluster analysis was conducted to classify the offenders through similar characteristics and as a result, they were grouped into three different groups. In order to analyze psychological characteristics of those three groups created by the cluster analysis, discriminant factor analysis was conducted. As a result of discriminal factor analysis, first group was composed of isolated individuals with habitual misconduct, the second group was suffered from schizophrenic symptoms, and the last group was composed of psychopathic individuals with history of high recidivism. Findings from the study suggest that different types of approach and treatment should be adopted based on the characteristics of each type of the offenders in order to effectively prevent the crime in the future.

본 연구에서는 심리검사와 심층면담을 통해 25명의 묻지마 범죄자들의 범죄심리학적 특성을 다면적으로 살펴보고 유사하게 나타나는 특성들을 기준으로 묻지마 범죄자들을 유형화하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 연구 참여에 동의한 25명의 묻지마 범죄자들을 대상으로 심리검사와 심층면담을 진행하였으며 추가적으로 범죄기록, 정신감정 기록 등을 조사하였다. 검사, 면담, 기록조사 등을 토대로 묻지마 범죄자들에게 빈번하게 나타나는 행동, 생활양식, 심리적 특성 변수 16개를 추출하여 군집분석을 실시해 이들을 세 집단으로 분류하였다. 군집분석을 통해 형성된 세 집단의 범죄심리학적 특이성을 분석하기 위해 판별분석을 실시한 결과 집단 1은 외톨이 문제행동 유형, 집단 2는 조현병 유형, 집단 3은 사이코패스 누범 유형으로 나타났다. 이와 같은 연구 결과는 세 가지 유형의 묻지마 범죄자들에 대해 각각의 차별적인 접근 방법과 범죄심리학적 특성을 반영한 예방책 마련이 필요할 수 있다는 점을 시사하며 각 집단의 효율적인 관리방안을 제시하였다.
