Purpose of this study is to set up what and how to do in class level in order to foster character of elementary school students. Creation of classroom climate was presented as prerequisites to achieve study purpose. Next, a suggestion was made on direction of character education considering development task for children and the influence of fundamental habits on character education was reviewed. Also, by denying effectiveness of previous method of character education, the necessity of new approach to class-oriented character education was newly suggested on the basis of necessity of class-oriented new approach, consideration of variables on class operation, and teacher factors. A school is basically a place of learning and therefore, this study specifically described variety and measures of character education through subjects and non-subjects as a method of character education. Finally, it presented a problem on existing evaluation method of character education and a task for development of character education based on the point of the above argument.

본 연구는 초등학생의 인성을 함양시키기 위하여 학급수준에서 무엇을 그리고 어떻게 할 것인가를 연구목적으로 삼았다. 연구목적을 달성하기 위하여 학급풍토를 조성하는 것이 선결조건으로 제시되었다. 다음으로 아동에 대한 발달과업을 고려한 인성교육의 방향 제시 및 기본생활습관이 인성교육에 미치는 영향력이 검토되었다. 또한, 과거의 인성교육 방법에 대한 실효성을 부정함으로써 학급중심의 새로운 접근 필요성, 학급운영 변인의 고려, 교사 요인을 바탕으로 학급중심의 인성교육에 대한 필요성을 새롭게 제시하였다. 학교는 기본적으로 학업수행이 이루어지는 장소이므로 학업을 통한 인성교육의 방법으로 교과와 비교과를 통한 인성교육의 다양성과 방안을 자세히 서술하였다. 마지막으로 지금까지의 논지를 바탕으로 기존의 인성교육에 대한 문제점을 검토하면서 인성교육의 발전을 위한 과제를 제시하였다.
