The purpose of this study is to find the problems with the contents regarding roles in the Society and Culture textbook for high school students through an analysis of the contents in terms of functionalism and symbolic interactionism and to suggest some solutions to those problems. For that purpose, this study examined the perspectives of functionalism and symbolic interactionism on role, taking as the objects of analysis three textbooks published in line with the curriculum revised in 2009. The result of analysis is as follows. First, role-related contents in the textbooks were tilted towards functionalism, causing an imbalance in theoretical perspectives. Second, functionalism and symbolic interactionism were mixed up in the role-related contents in the textbooks. Third, such basic and main concepts as role behavior, role expectation and role conflict were not properly defined, often being explained through invalid cases. In order to solve those problems, this study suggested teacher training on role theory as a short-term solution and the revision of curriculum and textbook on role-related contents as a mid- to long-term one.

본 연구의 목적은 역할 이론의 주요 관점인 기능주의와 상징적 상호작용론에 터하여 고등학교 「사회·문화」 교과서의 역할 관련 내용에 대한 분석을 통해 문제점을 파악하고 이를 해결할 수 있는 시사점을 제시하는 것이다. 이를 위해 역할 이론에 대한 기능주의와 상징적 상호작용론적 관점을 살펴보았으며, 2009 개정 교육과정에 따라 집필된 3종 교과서를 분석 대상으로 삼았다. 분석 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째 「사회·문화」 교과서의 역할 관련 내용은 주로 기능주의 관점에서 기술되어 관점의 편향성이 나타났다. 둘째, 「사회·문화」 교과서의 역할 관련 설명에서 기능주의와 상징적 상호작용론의 관점이 혼재된 경우도 있었다. 셋째, 역할 행동, 역할 기대, 역할 갈등 등과 같은 주요 역할 기본 개념들에 대한 정의가 부정확하거나 부적절한 사례를 제시하는 경우를 발견하였다. 위의 문제점을 해결하기 위해 본 연구는 단기적으로는 역할 이론에 대한 교사 연수, 중장기적으로는 해당 요소에 대한 교육과정 성취기준 및 교과서 집필 개선 방향 등을 제안하였다.
