Even though our school education has revised the national curriculum several times there has barely been changed. As a result, our school education has been facing the problem to qualitatively transform the ways for teaching students in classrooms. Though an effort to solve the problem may come from many directions, comparing Japanese elementary social studies instruction and Korean elementary social studies instruction may provide some clues for it. The purpose of this study was to build up theoretical and practical foundation by comparing and examining elementary social studies instruction in Japan and Korea. Thus we will find some similarities and differences in Japanese·Korean elementary social studies instruction by the comparison of school operating system surrounding classroom lessons and the way of reconstructing curriculum affecting directly them. Especially, this comparison and analysis may provide a theoretical background for an attempt to structure the nature state of school education and furthermore may give additional benefits to guide educational efforts and steps in the future as well as future directions and levels.

우리나라의 학교교육은 여러 차례 교육과정을 개정하였음에도 불구하고 변한 것은 별로 없다. 그 결과 학교교육은 교실수업의 방식을 어떻게 질적으로 전환할지의 문제를 해결해야만 하는 절실한 상황에 직면해 있다. 이 문제를 해결하기 위한 노력은 다방면에서 이루어질 수 있겠지만, 우리나라와 상황이 비슷한 것으로 이해되고 있는 일본 초등학교 사회과 교실수업을 우리나라 초등 사회과 교실수업과의 비교를 통해서도 그 해결의 실마리를 얻을 수 있을 것이다. 본 연구는 한·일 초등 사회과 교실수업의 방식을 비교·검토하여 질적 전환을 위한 이론적·실천적 토대를 마련해 보려 한 것이다. 그러므로 교실수업을 둘러싸고 있는 학교운영의 시스템과 교실수업에 직접적인 영향을 주는 교육과정의 재구성 방식을 비교하여 한·일 양국 초등학교 사회과 교실수업의 유사점과 차이점을 찾아보려고 한다. 특히 한·일 초등학교에서 시행되고 있는 사회과 교실수업의 모습에 대한 비교 분석은 학교교육의 본래적 모습을 구조화하려는 시도들에 이론적 배경을 제공하며, 차후 여러 교육적 시도들과 조처들이 나아가야 할 방향과 수준을 제시해 주는 부수적인 효과도 기대해 볼 수 있을 것이다.
