The purpose of this study is to provide meaningful implication for the development of life-long education by analyzing the recent domestic doctoral dissertations focused on self-directed learning for adult education. In this study, 42 doctoral theses which were published in the major 22 universities to investigate self-directed learning for adult education were collected and reviewed. The main variables are categorized based on the definition of Knowles(1975). The result of analyzing doctoral theses shows that: the learners' capacity of self-directed learning(8 theses, 19.1%), learners' diagnosis of learning need(4 theses, 9.5%), refinement of goal making(1 thesis, 2.4%), identification of human and material learning resources(10 theses, 24%), selecting and practicing learning strategy(13 theses, 31%), evaluation of the learning consequences(6 theses, 14%), so there have been more studies about the practice of learning strategy and identification of learning resources, but the variables of goal making and need diagnosis have not been studied a lot.

본 연구는 성인학습자를 대상으로 한 자기주도학습 관련 국내 박사 학위논문을 분석 하여 연구 동향을 파악함으로써 평생교육 발전에 시사점을 얻고자 1993년부터 2012년까 지 국내 22개 대학교에 제출된 42편의 박사 학위논문을 수집하여 연구하였다. 성인학습자를 연구 대상으로 한 이 논문들을 분석하여 첫째로 성인학습자의 자기주도 학습 관련 대학별 박사 학위논문의 연구 동향을 파악하고, 둘째로 성인학습자의 자기주 도학습 관련 주요 변인과 연구 결과를 분석하였다. 분류기준으로 사용한 주요 변인은 Knowles(1975)의 자기주도학습 정의에 터하여 6가 지로 정하였다. 논문을 분석한 결과 학습전략 선택과 실행 13편(31%), 인적ㆍ물적 학습 자원 확인 10편(24%), 학습자의 자기주도성 8편(19%), 학습 결과 평가 6편(14%), 학습자 의 학습요구 진단 4편(9.6%), 목표 수립 구체화 1편(2.4%)으로 나타나 학습전략 실행, 학 습 자원 확인의 순으로 연구가 많이 이루어졌고 학습자의 목표 수립, 요구 진단 변인은 연구가 적었다. 연구 결과 다양한 학습 전략을 구안하여 효과를 확인하거나, 좋은 인적ㆍ물적 학습 환 경을 제공하고자 노력하는 양적 연구가 대부분임을 확인하였다. 그러나 자기주도학습에 서 가장 중요하다고 할 수 있는 학습자의 목표 수립과 요구 진단 관련 연구는 부족한 것 으로 나타났다. 이러한 주제에 대하여 질적연구를 포함한 많은 심층적인 연구가 필요하 겠다.
