The purpose of this study was to understand the process of formation of social capital through the school soccer sports club activities for elementary students. This study was conducted by in-depth interviews and case studies. The participants were consisted of four elementary students in grade four though six who have attended or currently participate in school sports club activities. The process of how students make social capital through school sports clubs and how school sports clubs give affect the formation of social capital among elementary students was investigated using one-on-one interviews. First, the results of this analysis suggested that school soccer sports clubs give positive effects on the formation of social capital for elementary students. According to the results, students had a chance with others by cooperating in school soccer sports clubs to achieve a goal which needs collaboration and harmony. Through theses activities, students could control their behavior. Furthermore, students could develop positive attitudes and trust towards teachers and friends through sports activities. It was found that higher emotional intelligence quotient was especially affective to bring about positive effects on the formation of social capital. Second, the process of formation of social capital through the school soccer sports club activities was confirmed on a basis of Kohlberg's stages of moral development. There were 7 stages of formation of social capital ; selection(first stage), punishment and obedience(Second stage), way of needs satisfaction(third stage), harmony of personal relationship(fourth stage), maintenance of order(fifth stage), mutual reliance(sixth stage), and confidence(seventh stage).

본 연구는 초등학생의 축구 스포츠클럽 활동을 통한 사회적 자본 형성 과정을 이해하는데 목적이 있다. 연구방법으로는 사례연구를 중심으로 2012년 3월부터 2013년 2월까지 관찰과 심층면담을 실시하여 자료를 수집․분석하였다. 연구참여자는 4․5․6학년을 대상으로 운영하고 있는 초등학교 J 축구 스포츠클럽에서 최근까지 활동한 중학생 1명과 현재 활동하고 있는 6학년 2명, 5학년 1명이었다. 연구결과 첫째, 축구 스포츠클럽 활동이 초등학생의 사회적 자본 형성에 긍정적인 요인으로 작용하였다. 초등학생 혼자서 성취할 수 없는 목표를 협동적으로 달성하기 위한 조직으로써 축구 스포츠클럽은 서로 화합된 모습을 유지하며 바람직한 행동으로 이어질 수 있도록 상호의존적인 도움을 주었다. 또 초등학생들은 함께 축구 스포츠클럽 활동을 하면서 교사나 친구들과 서로에 대한 긍정적인 마음을 가짐으로써 신뢰를 형성하였다. 즉 반복적인 훈련을 통해 서로에 대한 믿음이 쌓임으로써 사회적 자본 형성에 긍정적인 영향을 주었다. 특히, 사회적 자본 중 감성지능의 측면에서 두드러지게 긍정적인 변화를 나타내고 있었는데 그 이유는 초등학생들이 축구 스포츠클럽 활동에 참여함으로써 다양한 상호 작용의 방법으로 소통과 배려, 규범을 준수하려는 노력을 하게 된다는 점이었다. 둘째, 초등학생의 축구 스포츠클럽 활동을 통한 사회적 자본 형성의 과정은 Kohlberg(1984)의 도덕 발달 단계가 근간이 되고 있음 확인하였다. 즉 자신의 선택에 대한 책임감을 갖게 되는 선택 단계를 시작으로 집단 활동의 가장 기본적인 단계라고 할 수 있는 처벌과 복종을 지향하게 되고, 욕구 충족을 위해 축구 스포츠클럽을 수단화하는 단계와 집단 내에서 대인관계의 측면에서 조화를 이루고자 하는 단계, 집단의 기대와 질서를 유지하고 소속감을 갖게 되는 단계, 동료 간에 서로 믿고 의지하게 되는 단계, 마지막으로 다양한 집단과의 교류를 통해 공동체 의식을 함양하는 확신의 단계로 발전하였다.
