The purpose of this study was to develop a carbon footprint concept-based low carbon education program to climate change response learning experience for the middle grades of elementary school. The research was developed through four major stages: (1) preparation, (2) development, (3) field test, and (4)evaluation and improvement. The outcome of the study shows following characteristics. First, the developed program follows the three region which is contents process of climate change, practical part on climate change response based on carbon footprint concept and expanding environments principle in accordance with students` cognitive developmental stages. Second, it includes program introduction, educational goals, learning process, relation to other subjects, time schedule, and the development plan of this education program. Third, this development of education program is made up of ten parts: cause of climate change, impact of climate change, understand of carbon footprint, closing & textiles life to reduce the carbon footprint, dietary life to reduce carbon footprint, housing life to reduce carbon footprint, means of transportation to reduce carbon footprint, consuming life to reduce carbon footprint, reducing carbon footprint of national and international society life, and the practice in life. The conclusion of this study was as follows. First, the low carbon education program for the climate change response based on carbon footprint concept was developed by considering the elementary school level, and associating with real-life activities. Second, the developed program had a positive effect on elementary students` awareness and attitude on climate change.

본 연구는 지구 기후변화 대응을 위하여 인간 활동에 의해 발생한 온실가스 배출이 지구에 미치는 영향을 나타내는 지표인 탄소발자국 개념에 기반을 둔 초등학교 3-4학년 대상 저탄소 교육프로그램을 개발하여 초등학교에서 효과적인 기후변화교육을 실시하는데 목표가 있다. 이를 위해 초등학생을 대상으로 하는 학습자의 발달 단계를 고려한 것뿐만 아니라 복잡한 시스템이나 인과관계에 대한 이해보다는 간단하면서도 구체적인 내용으로 구성된 프로그램을 개발하였다. 그리고 초등학생들이 탄소발자국이 줄어드는 과정을 직접 실천하고 자신의 탄소발자국이 줄어드는 과정을 통해 자신이 기후변화 문제에 직접 관계가 있다는 사실을 파악할 수 있도록 프로그램 내용 구성을 마련하였다. 이 프로그램은 탄소발자국 개념에 기반을 둔 저탄소 교육프로그램으로 교사들에게 저탄소교육을 현장에서 쉽게 적용할 수 있는 자료를 제공하고 학생들에게 기후변화에 대한 인식과 태도를 함양시켜 미래의 저탄소 사회를 이끌어갈 녹색시민으로의 성장을 도울 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 탄소발자국을 기반으로 하여 저탄소교육에 대한 하나의 사례를 보여준 것으로 앞으로 저탄소 사회를 이끌어갈 역량을 갖춘 인재를 양성하기 위한 다양한 프로그램이 개발되어야 할 것이다.
