I try to find the theory of self-cultivation by unity of sincerity and mindfulness focusing on elementary learning in Kim Gwengphil. At his time, many classical scholars preferred for governing people, composition to self-cultivation. Against this academic tradition, he tried to build a study of Dao based on elementary learning. His study of Dao contains study of righteousness-principle, the theory of self-cultivation by Sincerity-mindfulness and practice in ordinary life.
In the study of righteousness-principle, he emphasizes self-cultivation rather than governing people. He also criticized Confucianism mixed with Daoism and Buddhism at that time. And he insisted the theory of the One and the Many and Mindfulness based on elementary learning. Eventually he tried to overcome Han-Tang Confucianism. for establish Song-Ming Confucianism.
In theory of self-cultivation by Sincerity-mindfulness, he said Self-mindfulness and Preserving Mind. Firstly, he said the theory of self-cultivation based on Sincerity. It contains sprinkle-sweep and response, nine-thinking, nine-looks etc. for the preserving Mind based on the elementary learning.
Secondly, he presented the theory of self-cultivation based on Mindfulness. It contains the concentration on one thing, mindfulness, rectifying mind-following the Nature etc. for the Self-mindfulness based on the Great learning.
In the practice in ordinary life, he arranged rectifying mental attitude like not to say absurd remarks, keep situation, study of daily renovation, and observing moral rules like to reform old customs, be frugal, remove desires -endure angry.
