The objective of this study was to examine the meaning through qualitive inquiry into project class. The research questions were as follows. First, what abilities are developed through project class? Second, what effects does project class have on the learners? The subjects of this study were a fifth‐grade class at B Elementary School in Goyang City, Gyeonggi‐do, and included 18 male and 15 female children. The project used in this study was the ‘Bean’ Project. Data were collected through observation, interviews, impression presentation, and participant observation, and students’ activities during each session of the project were videotaped and transcribed. Collected data were analyzed and interpreted through the procedure of transcription, data integration, area classification and coding. The results of this study were as follows. First, the students had enhanced self‐directed learning abilities to make research by themselves, and became able to plan and solve by themselves for a given research task. Second, they participated and cooperated through social interaction, and attained abilities to communicate through discussions. Third, they developed responsibility through recognizing and carrying out their roles and duties through discussions. Fourth, they showed internal motivation intensified by heightened interest in the project class, and attained knowledge related to the project as well as abilities to apply the knowledge to other projects. The students expanded and reproduced knowledge through the process of generating creative ideas, and came to do flexible open thinking. In the project class activities, moreover, they participated more voluntarily than in any other cases, and their intensified internal motivation induced them to participate in the class actively. From the project class, the students experienced the value of sweat and the importance of laborious activities. In conclusion, project class is considered an effective learning method for enhancing learners’ ability and through improving their abilities and concentration on the class.

이 연구의 목적은 프로젝트 수업이 학습자에게 어떤 의미를 가지는가를 탐색해 보는 데 있다. 연구 주제는 첫째, 프로젝트 수업을 통해 길러지는 능력은 어떤 것들이 있는 가? 둘째, 프로젝트 수업이 학습자에게 미치는 효과는 무엇인가? 이다. 이 연구의 대상 은 경기도 고양시 B초등학교 5학년 1개 반으로 남자 18명, 여자 15명이다. 이 연구에 서 사용한 프로젝트 과제는 ‘콩’ 프로젝트이다. 자료 수집은 관찰, 면담, 소감 발표, 참 여 관찰을 이용하여 이루어졌고, 프로젝트 수업 과정 중에 학생들의 활동은 비디오로 녹화되어 전사되었다. 수집된 자료는 전사, 자료 통합, 영역 분류, 코딩의 절차를 통해 분석하고 해석 하였다. 이 연구에서 나온 결과는 다음과 같다. 1. 실과 프로젝트 수업을 통해 길러지는 능력은 어떤 것들이 있는가? 첫째, 학생들은 스스로 탐구하는 자기 주도적 학습 능력이 신장되며, 자기 스스로 연 구 과제에 대하여 계획을 세워 해결 할 수 있다. 둘째, 학생들은 사회적 상호작용을 통 해 참여와 협력을 할 수 있으며, 토의 과정을 통해 의사 소통 능력을 지니게 되었다. 셋째, 프로젝트 수업에서 토의를 통해 자신의 역할 및 임무를 인지하고 실천하는 책임 감을 기르게 되었다. 넷째, 학생들은 프로젝트 수업에 대한 흥미와 관심의 증가로 내적 동기가 커졌으며, 프로젝트와 관련된 지식을 획득하여 다른 프로젝트에 적용할 능력을 지니게 되었다. 2. 실과 프로젝트 학습이 학습자에게 미치는 효과는 무엇이 있는가? 학생들은 창의적인 아이디어를 생성하는 과정을 통해 지식의 확대 및 재생산을 해내 고 있었으며, 유연한 개방적 사고를 지니게 되었다. 또한 프로젝트 수업 활동에서 학생 들은 어느 때 보다도 더욱 자발적으로 참여하여, 학생들의 내적 동기가 향상되어 적극 적으로 수업에 참여할 수 있었다. 학생들은 프로젝트 수업을 통해 노력한 땀의 가치를 체득하여 노작활동의 소중함을 알게 되었다.
