A Reconsideration on the Faithfulness in Literary Translation: Focused on the Translation of Sound-based Wordplays in Alice in Wonderland in Korean and French. Interpreting and Translation Studies 13-2, pp. 81-99 The aim of this paper is to reconsider the notion of faithfulness in literary translation, which has been, along with the notion of readability, the major standard of evaluating the quality of translated works. As for the subject of analysis we chose translations in Korean and French of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland, which is famous for its nonsense, complicated logic, parodies, and wordplays. We particularly focused on the translation of sound-based wordplays, since they are one of the most common types of wordplay in Alice in Wonderland, and since they play an important role not only as a main source of humor but also as a base for the unrealistic logic of the wonderland created by Carroll. To render the sound-based wordplays of the source text into target texts, the translators used diverse methods; sometimes they depended on footnotes to preserve the form and meaning of words in the source text, and sometimes they reproduced a different type of new wordplay to create the similar humor for the readers of target text. Our analysis shows that ‘faithfulness’ is a notion that can be defined in totally different ways; while it can be used to emphasize a literal resemblance between the target text and the source text, it can be also applied for defending a somewhat liberal reconstruction of literacy in the target text. Without considering the author's unusual way of dealing with language, a 'faithful' translation of a work of literature, such as Alice in Wonderland, might not be achieved.
