Over the last hundred years, the nails have become more important for cosmetic reasons and less important for health concerns. Nails are continuously damaged and injured during our lifetime. Recently artificial nail art procedures can give severe damage to the natural nail. Thus, nail guard (also called nail strengthener/hardener) should be used to protect the nail from any artificial nail treatments. Nine adults women were selected as study models, their nails were damaged on purpose and then grouped into Group A and Group B. Experiments were carried out to study the effect of nail guards products on the surface and cut section of the damaged nail. Three cosmetical nail guards were selected considering the price, ease of operation and popularity. The group members applied the nail guard everyday to the damaged nail for two weeks. The morphological changes of nail surface and a cutting plane were monitored using scanning electron microscope (SEM). In addition to that, 43 questionnaires were examined to 100 women experienced artificial treatment or operation. An incentive to visit the nail shop, considerations including the number of visit and attitude in the nail shop and so many points of view on the nail art and nail shop business have been surveyed. In summary, many side effects of nail art treatment have been confirmed by the morphological change and questionnaire survey. The damaged portion of the upper part is more severe than that of the lower part of nails. Lamella structure of the damaged nail showed the serious crack. The nail guards products gave a temporal strengthening effect to the damaged nails. Among the ingredients of the nail guards products, the protein and moisturizing components are considered to be participated in the hardening of the nail. Many nail treatment customers didn't know the bad effect of artificial nail on the health of natural nail. These data could be used in the further study of nail guards research.

고대로부터 네일은 건강적인 면보다 미용적인 면에서 더욱 주목을 받아왔다. 네일은 일생에 걸쳐서 지속적으로 손상을 받고 있다. 특히 최근에 개성을 강조한 인조네일 시장의 팽장으로 천연네일의 손상이 더욱 심해지고 있는 상황이다. 따라서 인조네일 시술시에 네일의 손상을 최소화하고 회복을 돕기위한 네일보강제 혹은 네일가드의 사용이 필요하다 할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 9명의 여성실험자를 대상으로하여 시장에서 많이 사용되는 3종류의 네일가드의 품질을 검증하였다. 손톱의 표면과 단면을 전자현미경으로 관찰하여 인조네일 시술전과 후의 변화를 관찰하였으며 네일보강제가 네일시술로 인해 손상된 손톱에 미치는 영향을 조사하였다. 실험과 병행하여 100명의 여성을 대상으로 43개의 질문으로 이루어진 설문을 조사하여 심미적인 측면과 감정적인 측면에서의 네일보강제의 특성을 조사하였다. 우선 네일아트 시술이 네일의 건강에 상당한 부작용을 주는 것을 확인하였다. 기존의 네일 보강제의 효과는 네일의 구조에 일시적인 강화효과를 주는 것으로 볼 수 있었으며 전자현미경 사진의 판독결과 손상된 네일의 표면의 상단부가 하단부보다 손상이 심하였으며, 단면의 관찰결과 층상구조가 벌어진 것으로 확인되었다. 본 연구에서 사용된 세 종의 제품 중에서 A사의 제품이 다른 두 사의 제품보다 손상된 손톱의 회복효과가 가장 좋은 것으로 나타났으며 기타 품질에서도 보편적으로 우수한 것으로 보여 진다. 가격적인 면을 고려하면 C사의 제품과 A사와 거의 유사한 품질을 나타내어 대중적인 제품으로 네일관리를 원하는 고객의 경우 C사의 제품이 대안이 될 수 있을 것으로 판단된다. 네일보강제의 다양한 유용성분 중에서 유분성분 및 보습성분, 단백질 성분이 효과를 줄 수 있는 것으로 판단된다. 설문조사를 통하여 네일손상을 방지 혹은 치료할 수 있는 네일강화제가 필요함을 알 수 있었고 네일강화제의 사용 시에 제품에 대한 설명이 반드시 필요하다고 판단되었다. 본 연구의 결과는 추후 보다 장시간동안 광범위한 대상을 이용하여 성분별 효과를 검증하는 실험을 위한 기초자료로서 충분히 활용이 가능하다고 사료된다.
