Empirical research on the evaluation of Simultaneous Interpretation

Evaluation of an interpreting is a very important issue since it is closely related to three
perspectives of interpreting: market, research, and teaching. Among professional interpreters,
there is a fairly clear consensus as to what is “good” and what is “not good” or “bad.”
However, that standard could hardly be used to generalize those standards as seen by
other involved parties of the act of interpreting: speaker and audience. This paper attempts
to study problems with evaluation or quality assessment of simultaneous interpretation (SI)
and its pedagogical issues. For this purpose, a brief theoretical questionnaire on the quality
assessment of SI and factors that affect the quality of interpreting was created and presented. The result of the survey was analyzed to investigate the reaction of listeners to
various types of SI. Finally, several principles and methods for quality assessment of SI are
suggested.
