This paper explores the educational methods of Korean grammar in American Universities. Along with the rise of communication-centered language teaching methods, there has been a steady decline of grammar education. However with the view that communicational fluency cannot be fully realized without grammatical accuracy, more educators have emphasized the necessity of grammar education. The role that grammar plays in language education relies heavily on the characteristics of both the curriculum and the student. However, Korean language courses in American universities do not guarantee the number of classroom hours necessary for effective implementation of immersive curriculum for communication-centered language teaching methods. In this environment, grammar teaching occurs through direct teaching that rely heavily on deductive methods. While this method has the advantage of allowing students of Korean ethnicity to achieve high levels of fluency in a short period of time, it leaves behind non-Korean students that have no linguistic intuition. Therefore, Korean grammar education in American universities must provide a solution that effectively accommodates both Korean and non-Korean students.

이 논문은 미국대학에서 한국어 문법교육이 어떻게 실행되고 있는지를 고찰하였다. 의사소통 중심의 언어교수법이 발달되면서 문법 교육이 퇴조되는 경향을 나타내었다. 그러나 문법적 정확성이 갖추어지지 않고는 의사소통의 유창성이 완성될 수 없다는 인식이 나타나면서 다시금 문법교육의 필요성이 강조되고 있다. 문법을 어떻게 다룰 것인가의 문제는 교육과정의 특성이나 학습자의 특성과 깊은 연관을 갖는다. 그런데 미국대학의 한국어 수업은 의사소통 중심의 교육이 가능한 몰입교육과정을 도입할 만한 강의시수가 보장되어 있지 않다. 이러한 환경에서 문법에 대한 교수법은 연역적 방식에 의존한 직접교수 방식으로 이루어지고 있는 실정이다. 이는 대부분의 한국계 학습자들에게 빠른 속도로 높은 수준의 숙달 단계에 도달하도록 한다는 장점을 갖는 반면에 비한국계 학습자들을 소외시킨다는 단점이 나타난다. 따라서 미국대학에서 한국어 문법교육은 한국계 학습자들뿐만 아니라 비한국계 학습자들을 수용할 수 있는 방안을 마련해야 한다는 과제를 갖고 있다.
