Jung, Jung-rim. (2008). Translator's Intervention in Japanese-to-Korean Dubbing
Translation for the “Crayon Shinchang", a Japanese Animated Film: From the Perspectives
of Code and Relevance Theories. Interpreting and Translation Studies 11-2, pp. 119-133.
This study is to investigate to what extent a Japanese animated film (‘Crayon Shinchang')
dubbed into Korean represents interventions by the translator, which means, adapting the target text as appropriate to the discourse conventions of the target viewers. It also aims to investigate the possibility of distortions of the messages conveyed in the source text by such interventions. The 'code theory' and the 'relevance theory', two significant theories of pragmatics, are used as the frames of reference for the investigation. As regards the procedure, this paper compares the dialogues in the original film in Japanese with the ones in the dubbed film and discusses cases of intervention by the translator and their motivations at varied levels.
