This Study aims to investigate the anthropological and moral grounds of the communitarism in
Charles Taylor, which is compared to the liberalism. The communitarism criticizes the liberal concept of a person as unencumbered self or the atomism, and it proposes the social concept of a person. That is to say : A person as self-interpreting animals makes his identity by help of strong evaluation and interpersonal relationships in the community with others. Taylor criticizes the liberal concept of the priority of ‘right’ to ‘good’, and he maintains that moral norms need certainly the socially shared understanding of good, moral values and moral spaces in the community with others. However, the communitarism is not designated as a radical alternative of the liberalism, but rather as a complementary counterpart or as a modification of the liberalism. In a word : The liberal values, above all justice can be a constitutive part of the moral order in the community with others and our good life. One of basic problems of the liberalism or the moral universalism is lack of moral motivation, because it doesn't take the role of the concept of good and moral values for moral norms into consideration, and because it neutralizes moral spaces in the community with others. And because of lack of strong evaluation it is very difficult that a person makes his identity in the liberal society. The communitarism as moral particularism contributes to the correction of such problems of the liberalism.

본 논문의 목적은 찰스 테일러의 공동체주의를 중심으로 자유주의에 비교․대응되는 공동체주의의 인간학적, 윤리학적 근거를 밝히는 것이다. 공동체주의는 자유주의의 무연고적 자아, 원자화된 인간상 등을 비판하면서, 사회적으로 구성된 자아개념을 제안한다. 즉, 인간은 자기 해석하는 존재로서 강한 의미의 가치평가와 역사․문화적 공동체에서 타인과의 관계를 통해 자아정체성을 형성한다. 테일러는 개인의 권리가 도덕적 선(좋음)에 앞선다는 자유주의의 윤리개념을 비판하면서, 도덕규범은 사회적으로 공유된 도덕적 선과 가치, 역사․문화적으로 각인된 도덕적 맥락을 요청한다고 주장한다. 그러나 공동체주의와 자유주의의 최근의 이론적 접근이 보여주듯이, 공동체주의는 단순히 자유주의에 대한 비판이론으로서 자리매김 될 것이 아니라, 자유주의의 수정․보완이론으로 생각될 수 있다. 요컨대, 자유주의가 추구하는 가치들, 특히 정의는 사회의 도덕적 질서와 좋은 삶을 구성하는 중요한 부분으로 생각된다. 자유주의윤리학 또는 도덕적 보편주의는 도덕규범의 형성에 있어서 도덕적 선과 가치의 배제, 역사․문화적 공동체의 도덕적 중성화에 따른 도덕적 동기화의 난해함이라는 윤리학적 측면의 문제점과 강한 의미의 가치평가 과정의 결여와 그에 따른 자아정체성 형성의 난해함이라는 인간학적 측면의 문제점을 내포한다. 도덕적 특수주의로서 공동체주의는 자유주의윤리학 또는 도덕적 보편주의의 문제점 또는 결여된 부분을 수정․보완한다.
