초록

영어

Korean society has not valued communication skills. Traditionally an emphasis has been given on the cautiousness in saying words. As such, we have not been endowed much opportunity to systematically learn communication. The public road to communication has long been blocked. Suddenly without any sincere notice, however, the volume of social communication has exponentially increased. With too many people uttering too many unwarranted words, the credibility of such societal communication channels as mass media and political authorities has been severely damaged. Unfiltered words might have been condoned as the reactance to the formality and solemnity of the traditional communication practices. As digital technology interweaves various sectors of society in a wider scale, human communication practices will be manifested in a variety of shapes, some of which have not existed before in Korean society. Thus, such properties of digital technologies as interactivity, activity, synchronity, asynchronity, multimedia, hypertextuality, and packet switching are scrutinized in light of their influence on human relationships. Then, characteristics of human relationships in the digital age are derived. Along with the delineation of the changes in conditions that bring about many new practices of human relationships, a new communicator model is proposed and its implication toward Korean society is discussed. In spite of the fast influx of the western communication model, the traditional model based on Confucian ideology is hardly challenged. The traditional model, which prefers indirect, reserving, and metaphoric to direct, assertive, and explicit expressions, differs widely from the western model which values the utility of spoken words. If we revive the historical experiences of open communication that have existed throughout Korean history, proposing a new communicator model which works well in harmony with the digital age is not a difficult task. Building a communicator model should go beyond just transplanting the western model that disproportionately values the efficiency of transmission. Digital age is an age of communication explosion. As far as communication value is concerned, it is the age of confusion because various perspectives on communication, eastern and western, ancient and contemporary, are in direct collision with each other. Digital technology is a product of western civilization which is based on pragmatism. In a sense it is an irony to witness communication tools invented in the ‘low-context’ culture shake the fundamentals of the communication values of the ‘high-context’ culture.
