Jumping behavior is a vital locomotor strategy in frogs, typically consisting of four sequential phases: preparation, take-off, flight, and landing. Here, we present the first field observation of the jumping behavior of the Bornean endemic Sarawak slender litter frog (Leptobrachella gracilis). An adult individual was recorded on 13 August 2023 at Kinabalu Park, Sabah, Malaysia, and its movements were analyzed at 0.01-s intervals. The jumping sequence lasted 1.22 s, comprising a preparation phase (1.18 s) and a take-off phase (0.04 s). During preparation, the frog raised its head to approximately 90°, fully closed its eyes, and extended its forelimbs. At take-off, it flicked its forelimbs and vibrated its head simultaneously with hindlimb extension. These movements differ from previously described behaviors in other anurans, suggesting that the forelimbs may contribute to propulsion rather than serving solely for balance. This study provides the first evidence of a unique take-off behavior in L. gracilis and offers baseline information for understanding the biomechanics and evolutionary adaptations of amphibian locomotion.

개구리의 도약 행동은 생존을 위한 주요 이동 방식으로, 준비, 이륙, 비행, 착지의 네 단계로 구분된다. 본 연구에서는 보르네오 고유종인 사라왁가는나뭇잎개구리(Leptobrachella gracilis)의 도약 행동을 야외에서 촬영하여 분석하였다. 2023 년 8월 말레이시아 사바주 키나발루 공원에서 촬영된 영상을 0.01초 단위로 분석한 결과, 전체 도약 행동은 1.22초로 준비 단계 1.18초, 이륙 단계 0.04초로 구분되었다. 준비 단계에서 개체는 머리를 약 90°로 들어 올리고 눈을 감은 채 앞다리를 폈으며, 이륙 시 앞다리를 튀기고 머리를 진동시키는 행동을 보였다. 이러한 행동은 기존 개구리류에서 보고되지 않았으 며, 앞다리가 단순한 균형 유지 외에 비행의 추진을 보조할 가 능성을 시사한다. 본 연구는 L. gracilis의 독특한 도약 행동을 최초로 기술한 사례로, 향후 양서류의 운동생리 및 행동 진화 연구의 기초 자료로 활용될 수 있다.
