As discussions on care have been expanding in both Korea and Japan amid the background of low birthrates and an aging population, young carers have become socially visible. This study provides a current overview of young carers in both countries and examines their representations in literature, focusing on Young Adult (YA) fiction intended for adolescent readers. The novels analyzed in this study—Peppermint (2022) by Onyu Baek, With You (2020) by Kyoko Hamano, and The Opposite Shore (Mukōgishi, 2018) by Kana Yasuda—commonly feature young women who take care of their sick mothers as main characters. These stories illuminate various realities of caregiving such as the difficulties and crises young carers face, the conflict between developmental tasks and caregiving roles, and anxieties about the future. All of these narrative works show a young carer who moves from isolation toward solidarity through relationships with empathetic and understanding friends. Furthermore, the two Japanese novels, reflecting the didactic nature of the YA genre, characteristically include concrete depictions of welfare systems related to young carer support. The young carer novels discussed in this paper focus on the value of care, reflect on the crisis of caregiving, and explore an ethics of care aimed at transforming society toward one centered on mutual care networks. By participating in the broader human endeavor to conceptualize communities grounded in shared ethical responsibility and care, these novels demonstrate how literature can contribute to critical reflections on vulnerability and relationality.

최근 한･일 양국에서 저출생･고령화 등을 배경으로 돌봄 관련 논의가 확산되는 가운데 영 케어러(Young Carer)가 사회적으로 가시화되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 한국과 일본의 영 케어러 관련 실태를 개관하고, 양국의 문학에 나타난 영 케어러의 재현을 청소년 독자층을 대상으로 하는 YA(Young Adult) 소설을 중심으로 살펴본다. 본고에서 분석한 백온유의 페퍼민트(2022)와 하마노 교코(濱野京子)의 너의 곁에 있을게(With you)(2020), 야스다 가나(安田夏菜)의 건너편 기슭(むこう岸)(2018)은 공 통적으로 신체적･정신적으로 아픈 어머니를 돌보는 여성 청년을 주요 등장인물로 삼아 영 케어러가 겪는 곤경과 위기 상황, 청년기 생애 과업과 돌봄 역할 사이의 경합, 미래에 대한 불안 등의 다양한 돌봄 현실을 조명한다. 또한 이들 소설은 모두 영 케어러 당사자가 그녀에게 공감과 이해를 보이는 또래 친구와의 관계 맺음을 통해 고립에서 연대로 나아 가는 서사를 보인다. 나아가 일본의 두 소설의 경우 YA소설의 장르적 특성이라 할 수 있는 계몽적 성격을 반영해 영 케어러 지원과 관련된 복지 제도에 관한 구체적 묘사를 담고 있는 것이 특징이다. 본고가 주목한 영 케어러 소설은 돌봄의 가치에 주목하고 돌봄 위기를 성찰하며, 상호 돌봄의 관계망을 중심에 둔 사회로 가치를 전환해 나가기 위한 돌봄 윤리를 탐색한다. 이는 인간이 지닌 근원적 취약성과 상호의존성에 기반해 서로 돌보는 공동체로 향해가는 여정에 문학이 참여하는 한 형태일 것이다.
