This study explores the applicability of a Problem-Based Learning (PBL) approach as an alternative to traditional teacher-centered methods in elementary ballet education, aiming to enhance students’ creativity and self-directed learning. An eight-session program was developed for grades two to four, based on the classical ballet Don Quixote and structured within the PBL framework. Integrating activities such as choreography, stage design, and prop making, the program encouraged active participation and problem-solving within the ballet’s cultural and literary context. Through this process, students were expected to cultivate both technical ballet skills and key competencies including creativity, autonomy, and collaboration. This study highlights the educational value of reconstructing conventional ballet instruction through an interdisciplinary, learner-centered approach, presenting a new pedagogical model that demonstrates the practical potential of PBL in dance education.

본 연구는 초등 발레 교육에서 전통적으로 활용되어 온 주입식 교수법의 한계를 극복하고, 학습자의 창의성과 자기주도 학습 역량을 함양하기 위한 대안으로 PBL(Problem-Based Learning, 문제중심학습)을 적용한 클래식 발레 교육 프로그램의 활용 가능성을 탐색하였다. 이를 위해 초등학교 2~4학년 학생을 대상으로 클래식 발레 작품 <돈키호테>를 주제로 한 총 8차시 교육과정을 PBL 모형에 근거하여 설계하였다. 프로그램은 작품의 문 화적·문학적 배경 이해를 바탕으로 안무 창작, 무대 구성, 소품 제작 등 통합 예술 활동을 포함하여 학습자가 실제 문제해결 과정을 주도적으로 경험하도록 구성되었다. 이를 통해 학습자는 발레 기술 습득뿐 아니라 창의 적 사고력, 자기주도적 학습 태도, 협력적 문제해결 능력 등 인지적·사회적 역량의 향상을 도모할 수 있다. 본 연구는 창의적이고 융합적인 접근을 통해 전통적 발레 교육의 구조를 재구성하고, 초등 발레 교육의 방향 전환 과 PBL 기반 무용교육 모델의 실천적 가능성을 제시한다는 점에서 의의가 있다.
