In recent years, Free Major Programs in Korean universities have received growing attention as flexible academic models that expand students’ autonomy in major selection and promote interdisciplinary and convergence-based education. This study aims to examine the governance-centered operational structures, relevant institutional cases, key challenges, and potential improvement strategies associated with Free Major Programs in Korean higher education. To this end, relevant literature and institutional cases were collected and analyzed based on data available as of March and September 2025. The analysis reveals that successful implementation of Free Major Progrmas requires the establishment of a robust academic and administrative support system, the balance between student autonomy and structured academic advising, the development of complementary institutional mechanisms, and the design of sustainable governance and performance evaluation frameworks. By examining the current status and proposing future directions for Free Major Programs governance, this study offers meaningful implications for higher education policy development and improvements in university-level academic administration in Korea.

최근 국내 대학에서 자유전공학부는 학생들의 전공 선택권을 확대하고 학문 간 융복합 교육을 실현하는 학부 운영 모델로 많은 주목을 받고 있다. 본 연구는 자유전공학부 의 거버넌스 중심 운영 체계 현황과 관련 사례, 주요 쟁점과 개선 방안을 탐색하는데 그 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 2025년 3월과 9월을 기준으로 관련 문헌과 사례를 조사하고 이 를 종합 정리, 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 자유전공학부의 성공적인 운영을 위해 자유전공 교육 및 행정 체제와 인력 운영 강화, 학생 자율성과 아카데믹 어드바이징 체계 간의 조 화, 자유전공체제 보완을 위한 다각적 방안 마련, 지속가능한 자유전공 거버넌스 구조 와 성과관리 체계 구축 등이 제시되었다. 본 연구는 자유전공학부의 거버넌스 관련 운 영 현황과 발전 방안을 모색함으로써 향후 고등교육 정책 수립과 대학 학사 운영 개선 에 기여할 수 있을 것이다.
