As the climate and environmental crisis has emerged as a major global issue, the importance of environmental education is being increasingly emphasized in the field of education. Accordingly, diverse approaches to environmental education have been developed in alignment with the characteristics of each subject, with particular attention drawn to upcycling art in the field of art education. However, in practice, most activities remain limited to either the repetitive use of similar materials and methods or one-off experiential events. Furthermore, they often lack a clear distinction from existing art activities utilizing discarded materials, and their tangible effectiveness as environmental education remains ambiguous. This study analyzes the case of the internationally recognized Remida Center in Italy to explore the direction upcycling art should take to become truly sustainable education. The Remida Center not only collects a wide range of industrial waste in collaboration with local companies and supplies them to schools and educational institutions, but also contributes to raising environmental awareness in the community through programs designed for diverse audiences. The case study of the Remida Center offers valuable insights for examining the sustainability of environmental art education utilizing upcycling art in Korea.

기후·환경 위기가 전 지구적으로 주요 화두가 됨에 따라, 교육계에서도 환경교육의 중요성이 더욱 강조되고 있다. 이에 따라 각 교과의 특성에 부합하는 다양한 환경교육 방법론이 개발되고 있으며, 미술 교과에서는 특히 ‘업사이클링 아트(upcycling art)’가 주목받고 있다. 그러나 현실에서는 유사한 재료와 활용 방식이 반복되거나, 일회성 체험 활동에 그치는 경우가 대부분이다. 또한 기존의 폐품 활용 미술 활동과 차별성이 모호하여, 환경교육으로서의 실질적인 효과 역시 명확하게 드러나지 않는 한계가 있다. 이에 본 논문에서는 환경교육으로서 업사이클링 아트가 진정으로 지속가능한 교육이 되기 위해서 나아갈 방향을 탐색하기 위해 국제적으로 주목받고 있는 이탈리아의 레미다(Remida) 센터 사례를 분석하였다. 레미다 센터는 지역 기업과의 협업을 통해 업사이클링 아트의 재료가 되는 다양한 종류의 폐자재를 수거하여 지역 학교 및 교육 기관에 공급할 뿐 아니라 다양한 대상을 포괄하는 프로그램 제공을 통해 지역 사회의 환경의식 고취에 기여하고 있다. 레미다 센터 사례 연구는 국내의 업사이클링 아트 활용 환경미술교육의 지속가능성 고찰에 있어 중요한 시사점을 제공해 줄 것이다.
