The purpose of this study is to explore the potential impact of a liberal arts course that uses traditional Korean music as a medium on college students’ multicultural sensitivity and awareness. To achieve this, a survey on changes in multicultural awareness was conducted among 31 students from H University in Chungbuk after they participated in the “Understanding Korean Music” liberal arts course. Quantitative analysis was performed, and open-ended questions were added to supplement the data. The quantitative analysis revealed a high level of the overall satisfaction with the course. In particular, a comparative-cultural approach and experience-based activities served as key factors in enhancing the effectiveness of the course. Changes in multicultural awareness before and after the course were verified through a paired-sample t-test, revealing statistically significant improvement in all items. The students demonstrated an increased understanding of multicultural society, greater respect for cultural differences and similarities, and heightened interest in and pride toward in Korean traditional music. The results from the open-ended questions showed that a the comparative-cultural approach, based on the historical and cultural context of traditional Korean music, and hands-on musical activities were effective in increasing the students’ classroom engagement and understanding. Furthermore, most of the students, regardless of their major, evaluated that felt they were able to fully participate in the course class. This suggests the potential of functiong as an integrated multicultural education program that combines liberal arts and major courses. These findings demonstrate that multicultural education mediated through Korean traditional music can serve as an effective educational model encompassing both cognitive and affective outcomes. They also present the possibility for institutional discussions on incorporating such courses into the regular curriculum, as well as for broader dissemination in various educational settings.

본 연구는 한국 전통음악을 매개로 하는 교양 교과목이 대학생의 다문화 감수성 및 인식 변화에 미치는 가능성을 탐색하는데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 충북의 H대학 31명을 대상으로 ‘한국음악의 이해’ 교양 과목 수업에 참여한 후 다문화 인식 변화에 대한 설문조사를 실시하 였으며, 양적 분석을 진행하고 보완할 수 있도록 개방형 질물을 추가하였다. 양적 분석 결과, 전통음악을 매개로한 다문화 수업이 학생들의 다문화 인식 변화에 도움을 주었으며, 특히 비교문화적 접근, 체험 기반 활동 등이 수업의 효과성을 높이는 주요 요인으 로 작용하였다. 수업 전 후의 다문화 인식 변화는 대응표본 t검정을 통해 검증하였고, 모든 문항에서 통계적으로 유의미한 향상이 나타났다. 학습자들은 수업을 통해 다문화 사회에 대 한 이해, 문화 간 차이와 유사성 존중, 한국 전통음악에 대한 관심과 자긍심을 강화한 것으로 나타났다. 개방형 질문의 답변 결과, 한국 전통음악의 역사적ㆍ문화적 맥락을 기반으로 한 비교문화적 접근과 실제 음악을 체험하는 활동이 학습자들의 수업 몰입도와 이해도를 높이는 데 효과적 었다는 결과를 얻었다. 또한 전공과 관계없이 대부분의 학습자들이 수업에 충분히 참여할 수 있었다고 평가하였으며, 이는 대학 교양 강좌-전공 통합형 다문화 교육으로서의 가능성 을 시사한다. 이러한 연구 결과는 한국 전통음악을 매개로 한 다문화 교육이 인지적ㆍ정서적 효과를 모두 아우르는 효과적인 교육 모델임을 보여주며, 향후 정규 교과 적용을 위한 제도적 논의와 다양한 교육 현장에서의 확산 가능성을 제시한다.
