This paper reconstructs the process by which European visual styles of caricature were transferred to Japan on the eve of the Meiji Restoration. First, it examines the specificities of caricature as a medium and the emergence of modern caricaturists. Second, it probes the constitutive formation of new ways of seeing individuals, people, and the masses. Third, it reveals the interconnectedness among the mechanisms of the comic, the grotesque, and the stereotype. Through this analysis, I argue that the production, circulation, and consumption of caricatures in modern Japan visualized people’s struggle against the state to constitute a modern self and society. At the same time, the Japanese caricature circulated a way of seeing that divided ‘us’ and ‘them’ into categories of ‘civilized’ and ‘uncivilized.’

이 글은 근대 유럽에서 유통된 캐리커처 또는 만화가 일본에도 전파되는 과정을 다음의 3가지 방식으로 재구성한다. 첫째, 구체적인 만화 매체와 만화가의 출현을 추적하면서 근대 일본 시사만화의 형식을 밝힌다. 둘째, 그림으로 된 만화의 담론을 재구성하면서 일본에서 근대적 개인, 인민, 대중이 구성되는 보는 방식을 추출한다. 셋째, 만화라는 매체가 가지고 있는 유쾌함(comic)의 작동방식이 불균형과 기형성으로 형상화된 추(醜) 그리고 정형화된 이미지(stereotype)와 연계되어 있음을 보여준다. 근대 일본 시사만화의 생산, 유통, 소비과정의 역사적 재구성을 통해 만화는 국권에 대항하는 민권을 가시화하면서 근대적 개인과 인민을 구성하였음을 알 수 있다. 또한 청일전쟁과 러일전쟁을 거치면서 만화 매체는 ‘우리’와 ‘그들’을 ‘문명’과 ‘미개’로 보는 방식을 유통시켰다. 또한 근대 시사만화는 정형화된 잔상(殘像)을 남기면서 스테레오타입의 재생산에 개입하기도 하였다.
