This study explores the psychological development and relational transformation of the protagonist Hiccup in the How to Train Your Dragon trilogy, with the aim of examining the potential of psychological character analysis in animated narratives. Utilizing the Big Five Personality Traits model and Attachment Theory as primary analytical frameworks, this study analyzes the changes in Hiccup’s personality and interpersonal relationships across the three theatrical films. The findings reveal that Hiccup undergoes a transformation from an emotionally unstable and passive individual to a mature and responsible leader, marked by increases in extraversion, conscientiousness, and agreeableness, and a decrease in neuroticism. Concurrently, his attachment patterns shift from avoidant to secure through interactions with his parents, romantic partner, and community, culminating in emotional autonomy and social responsibility. These changes symbolically represent a psychological journey from adolescence to adulthood. The study demonstrates that long-form animated series centered on character growth can serve as meaningful material for understanding adolescent development and offers possibilities for interdisciplinary analysis combining animation studies and psychology.

본 연구는 〈드래곤 길들이기〉 시리즈에 나타난 주인 공 히컵의 성격 발달과 대인관계 변화 과정을 분석함으 로써, 애니메이션 캐릭터의 심리학적 분석 가능성과 교 육적 함의를 탐색하고자 한다. 이를 위해 성격심리학의 대표적 이론인 성격 5요인 모델과 애착 이론을 주요 분석 도구로 설정하고, 극장판 3부작(1, 2, 3편)에 나 타난 히컵의 성격 특성과 관계 구조를 편별로 분석하였 다. 분석 결과, 히컵은 외향성, 성실성, 우호성의 향상 과 신경성의 감소를 통해 불균형한 성격 구조에서 성숙 하고 책임감 있는 리더형 인물로 변화하였다. 동시에 회피 애착에서 시작된 관계 구조는 부모, 연인, 공동체 와의 상호작용을 거치며 안정 애착으로 이행하였으며, 이는 정서적 자율성과 사회적 책임의 기반이 되었다. 이러한 심리 변화는 히컵이 청소년기에서 성인기로 이 행하는 정체성 확립 과정을 상징적으로 구현하는 구조 로 해석된다. 본 연구는 캐릭터 중심의 장기 서사 애니 메이션이 청소년의 심리 발달을 설명할 수 있는 유의미 한 분석 대상으로 기능할 수 있음을 확인하며, 애니메 이션 서사에 대한 심리학적 접근의 학문적 확장 가능성을 제시한다.
