This study offers a hermeneutic examination of the narrative structure and visual symbolism in Anthony Browne's picturebook Hansel and Gretel, based on Paul Ricoeur's theory of Triple Mimesis. Grounded in the Brothers Grimm's classic folktale, the picturebook is reinterpreted through the creator's personal experiences and historical context, forming a circular hermeneutic structure in which meaning is completed through the reader's interpretive engagement. The research framework is constructed around Ricoeur's Mimesis - I, II, and III-to analyze the narrative structure, the function of visual symbols, and the processes of reader reception and reinterpretation. Anthony Browne's Hansel and Gretel preserves the framework of the original tale while integrating modern sensibilities and personal memory through visual devices, resulting in a complex narrative structure where text and image interact. This interplay encourages the reader to actively interpret the narrative and connect it with their own lived experience. The study demonstrates that such a reading approach allows the picturebook to be redefined not as a medium solely for children but as a narrative genre capable of philosophical reflection and interpretive depth.

본 연구는 앤서니 브라운(Anthony Browne)의 그림 책 『헨젤과 그레텔』에 나타난 이야기 구조와 시각적 상 징을 폴 리쾨르(Paul Ricoeur)의 삼중 미메시스 (Triple Mimesis) 이론에 근거하여 해석적으로 고찰하 였다. 그림형제(Brothers Grimm)의 고전 민담을 바탕 으로 한 이 그림책은 창작자의 개인적 경험과 시대적 맥락 속에서 재구성되며 독자의 해석 행위를 통해 의미 가 완성되는 해석학적 순환 구조를 보여준다. 연구 방 법으로는 리쾨르의 미메시스 I, II, III의 개념을 중심으 로 해석의 틀을 구성하고 이야기의 구조, 시각적 상징 의 기능, 독자의 수용 및 재구성 과정을 분석하였다. 브라운의 『헨젤과 그레텔』은 고전 서사의 틀을 유지 하면서도 현대적 감수성과 작가 개인의 기억을 반영한 시각적 장치를 통해 텍스트와 이미지가 상호작용하는 복합적 서사 구조를 형성한다. 이를 통해 독자는 내러 티브를 능동적으로 해석하며 자신의 경험과 연결 짓는 인식적 활동을 수행하게 된다. 본 연구는 이러한 읽기 방식이 그림책을 단순한 아동용 매체가 아닌 철학적 사 유와 해석이 가능한 서사 장르로 확장시킬 수 있음을 보여준다.
