This study aims to empirically analyze the English transliteration and translation of Korean historical terms used in Korean history education for non-Korean learners. As global interest in Korean Studies continues to grow, English has become the primary medium for teaching Korean history abroad. However, there is currently no consensus or standardized system for representing Korean historical terms in English. Based on general education Korean history courses conducted in English at a university in Korea, this research surveyed 28 international students and conducted follow-up interviews. Participants were asked about their preferences between Romanized terms (e.g., Yangban, Seodang) and translated equivalents (e.g., Joseon noble, Primary school in Joseon) and their reasons for these choices. The findings show a general preference for Romanized Korean terms, particularly among Korean history majors, who emphasized preserving historical and cultural identity. In contrast, translated terms were preferred by some beginners and non-majors for their clarity and accessibility. Ultimately, the study suggests that a hybrid strategy combining translation with Romanization is the most effective approach for enhancing comprehension and engagement among diverse learners. This approach supports both educational clarity and cultural authenticity, and may serve as a foundational proposal for developing standardized English terminology in Korean history education.

이 연구는 외국인을 대상으로 한 한국학 교육에서 한국사 용어의 영어 표 기 방식에 대한 실증적 분석을 목적으로 한다. 최근 한국학에 대한 세계적 관심이 확산되면서, 영어를 매개로 한 한국학 교육이 활성화되고 있으나, 고 유 한국사 용어의 표기 방식에 대한 합의나 체계가 미비한 실정이다. 본 연구는 국내 A대학에서 영어로 진행된 한국학 교양수업을 기반으로, 외국인 대학생 28명을 대상으로 설문 및 심층 인터뷰를 수행하였다. 설문에 서는 한국사 용어를 그대로 로마자로 표기하는 방법과 용어가 가진 의미를 파악하여 번역한 표기 중 선호도를 파악하고 그 이유를 분석하였다. 그 결 과, 전공자와 비전공자 모두 고유 명사 기반의 로마자 표기를 더 선호하는 경향을 보였으며, 이는 역사적 정체성과 문화적 맥락을 보존하려는 의도로 해석되었다. 반면, 일반 학습자나 초기 단계 학습자의 경우에는 이해 용이성 을 이유로 설명 중심의 번역어를 선호하는 경향도 확인되었다. 결과적으로, 한국학 용어의 영어 표기는 고유 용어를 먼저 쓰고 의미를 제시한 후, 고유 용어 그대로 로마자로 표기하는 전략이 학습자의 이해도 와 몰입도를 높이는 데 효과적인 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 한국학 교육 의 국제화 및 다문화 수용성을 높이기 위한 표기 체계 제안의 기초자료로 활용될 수 있다.
