This study investigates the character of Jasmine, the protagonist of the film Blue Jasmine, through the lens of psychological defense mechanisms, offering a systematic framework for understanding complex character psychology and its translation into performance techniques. Drawing on psychoanalytic theory, the research examines five primary defense mechanisms—denial, repression, projection, rationalization, and dissociation—analyzing their manifestation across verbal, physical, and emotional dimensions. The analysis reveals a distinct psychological trajectory: Jasmine initially relies on denial and rationalization but progressively shifts to repression and projection as her crisis deepens, ultimately reaching a dissociative state that signifies profound psychological regression. Cate Blanchett's performance masterfully articulates these layered psychological transitions through precise modulation of vocal tone, gaze control, bodily tension, and speech rhythm. This study demonstrates that the concept of defense mechanisms provides a powerful interpretive framework for analyzing inner conflicts and irrational behavior in character development, offering actors concrete strategies for emotional calibration and psychological authenticity. The defense mechanism analysis establishes an innovative methodological approach for articulating the tension between spoken content and unspoken emotional truth in performance. This research significantly advances the interdisciplinary dialogue between psychology and the performing arts by providing both theoretical insights and practical applications that enrich acting pedagogy. The findings contribute valuable tools for acting training and character construction that authentically reflect the complexity and contradictions of human psychology in dramatic representation. The purpose of this study is to analyze in-depth the operational aspects of the five main defense mechanisms shown by the main character Jasmine in "Blue Jasmine"—denial, oppression, projection, rationalization, and dissociation—and expand them into practical analysis tools of acting art. Through this, we intend to present a systematic character analysis approach that can be used by actors to grasp the psychological structure of complex characters and express them physically and emotionally.

본 연구는 영화 〈블루 재스민〉의 주인공 재스민 캐릭터를 심리적 방어기제의 관점에서 분석하였다. 이를 통해 인물의 복합적인 내면 구조를 이해하고, 이를 연기적으로 구현할 수 있는 구체적 방법을 모색 하고자 하였다. 연구는 정신분석학의 방어기제 개념을 이론적 틀로 삼았다. 재스민이 보여주는 부정, 억 압, 투사, 합리화, 해리의 방어기제를 언어적·신체적·정서적 차원에서 체계적으로 분석하였다. 분석 결 과, 재스민은 서사 전개에 따라 뚜렷한 심리적 변화 궤적을 보였다. 초기에는 부정과 합리화를 통해 현실 을 회피하지만, 위기가 심화될수록 투사와 억압으로 전이한다. 결국 해리 상태에 이르는 심리적 퇴행 과 정을 보여주었다. 케이트 블란쳇은 이러한 방어기제의 전환과 중첩을 목소리 톤, 시선 처리, 신체 긴장도, 발화 리듬 등 미세한 연기 표현을 통해 설득력 있게 구현하였다. 본 연구는 방어기제 개념이 인물의 내 면 갈등과 비합리적 행동을 해석하는 유효한 분석 틀임을 보여준다. 이를 바탕으로 배우는 인물의 심리 적 메커니즘을 이해하고, 신체와 정서를 유기적으로 통합하는 연기 전략을 수립할 수 있다. 특히 방어기 제 분석은 등장인물의 언어적 표현과 비언어적 정서 사이의 긴장 관계를 구체화하는 실천적 방법론으로 작용할 수 있다. 나아가 심리학과 연기예술 간의 학제적 연계 가능성을 확장하며, 인간 심리의 복합성을 표현하는 연기 훈련과 캐릭터 창조에 실질적인 기여를 할 것으로 기대한다. 더불어 본 연구는〈블루 재 스민〉의 주인공 재스민 캐릭터가 보여주는 다섯 가지 주요 방어기제—부정, 억압, 투사, 합리화, 해리— 의 작동 양상을 심층 분석하고, 이를 연기예술의 실천적 분석 도구로 확장하는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 통 해 배우가 복잡한 인물의 심리 구조를 파악하고, 이를 신체적·정서적으로 표현하는 데 활용할 수 있는 체계적인 캐릭터 분석 접근법을 제시하고자 한다.
