This study aims to explore Kim So-wol’s ecological consciousness, focusing on his representation of the soul. While previous research has interpreted Kim So-wol’s poetry through an aesthetic attitude toward nature and animals and a shamanistic worldview, this study emphasizes his self-awareness and its inherent ecological significance. Kim So-wol’s poetic world is characterized by mourning for an absent beloved and a rejection of reality, but these emotions also serve as a catalyst for seeking solace in nature and animals. Rather than emphasizing individual subjectivity, he discovers ‘靈’(spirit) through responsiveness to the Other, thereby forming a heterological self-awareness. In particular, through the concept of ‘心靈’(mind-spirit), he perceives all living beings as possessing souls and regards his physical body as a medium through which he connects with nature. Additionally, his repeated depictions of communication with animals highlight a horizontal relationship between humans and nature. At the same time, Kim So-wol recognizes that an ecological subject cannot exist without being separated from human society. His poetry frequently expresses pessimism toward life and confessions of a death drive, revealing an internal conflict between the ethical view of all things as part of an endless cycle and the human will to persist in life. At the intersection of ‘人情’(human sentiment) and ‘心靈’(mind-spirit), he contemplates the practical choices between continuing human life and accepting the natural order with detachment. Reinterpreting Kim So-wol’s poetry from an ecological perspective provides an opportunity to reflect on the relationship between humans and nature. His poetry goes beyond mere admiration for nature, instead exploring the conditions of human existence and the possibilities for ecological practice. This reflection remains relevant today, offering critical insights into our contemporary ecological crisis.
