The purpose of this study is to identify the types and characteristics of motivations that lead adult learners to enroll in university and participate in learning. By doing so, it aims to provide foundational data for universities to develop effective tailored educational programs and support policies for adult learners. This study applied the Q methodology to explore the motivations behind adult learners' university admission and learning. Q sorting was conducted with 10 adult learners majoring in social welfare at K University in Chungcheongbuk-do, and the sorted statements were analyzed using Ken-Q Analysis software. The study identified two main types of motivations for adult learners' university admission and academic engagement. The first type, classified as 'Motivation for an Enhanced Quality of Life,' indicates that adult learners primarily pursue higher education for a better quality of life. The second type, classified as 'Motivation for Professional Certification and Post-Retirement Economic Activities,' shows that learners aim to obtain professional certifications and prepare for economic activities in their retirement. The cumulative explained variance for the two types was 36%, suggesting that these two factors appropriately represent the motivations of adult learners. Finally, the implications of the study and suggestions for future research are presented.

본 연구는 성인학습자들이 대학에 진학하여 학습에 참여하는 동기의 유형과 특성을 파악하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 통해 대학들이 성인학습자들에게 효과적인 맞춤형 교육 프로그램과 지원 정책을 제공할 수 있는 기초 자료를 제공하고자 한다. 본 연구는 성인학습자의 대학진학과 학습 동기를 탐색하기 위해 Q 방법론을 활용했다. 충청북도 소재 K대학의 사회복지학과 성인학습자 10명을 대상으로 Q 분류를 실시하였으며, 분류된 진술문은 Ken-Q Analysis 소프트웨어를 활용하여 Q 요인분석을 실시하였다. 성인학습자의 대학진학 및 학업 동기는 두 가지 주요 유형으로 분류되었다. 제1유형은 '품격 높은 삶을 위한 동기'로, 성인학습자들은 주로 질 높은 삶을 위해 대학에 진학한다는 사실을 보여준다. 제2유형은 '전문적 자격증 취득과 노후 경제활동을 위한 동기'로, 성인학습자들은 주로 전문적인 자격증을 취득하고 노후 경제활동을 위해 대학에 진학하는 동기를 갖고 있었다. 두 유형의 전체 누적 설명량은 36%로, 성인학습자의 대학진학 및 학업 동기를 두 개의 요인으로 구성하는 것이 타당하다는 결과 를 얻었다. 마지막으로 연구의 함의와 제언을 제시하였다.
