This study aims to examine the mediating effect of fear of failure in the relationship between elementary school students’ perceived parenting attitudes and their growth mindset. A survey was conducted with 215 elementary school students in Pocheon, Gyeonggi Province, and the collected data were analyzed using correlation analysis, multiple regression analysis, and mediation analysis. The results revealed that parenting attitudes significantly influence the formation of a growth mindset. Specifically, democratic parenting was found to promote a growth mindset, whereas controlling and indifferent parenting hindered its development. Additionally, parenting attitudes were found to impact fear of failure, with controlling and indifferent parenting increasing fear of failure, while democratic parenting acted as a protective factor in reducing it. Fear of failure was identified as a factor that negatively affects the formation of a growth mindset. Mediation analysis confirmed that parenting attitudes indirectly influence the growth mindset by either exacerbating or alleviating fear of failure. These findings highlight the crucial role of parenting attitudes in shaping children’ s growth mindset and suggest the need for parental education and interventions aimed at reducing fear of failure. Furthermore, this study emphasizes the importance of feedback that emphasizes effort and strategies rather than outcomes to help children perceive failure as a part of learning and cultivate a proactive approach toward challenges.

본 연구는 초등학생이 인식한 부모의 양육태도와 성장 마인드셋의 관계에서 실패공포의 매 개효과를 검증하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 경기도 포천시 초등학생 215명을 대상으로 설문조사 를 실시하고, 상관분석, 다중회귀분석, 매개효과 분석을 수행하였다. 연구 결과, 부모의 양육 태도는 성장 마인드셋 형성에 유의한 영향을 미치며, 민주적 양육은 이를 촉진하는 반면, 통 제적․무관심 양육은 저해하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한, 부모의 양육태도는 실패공포에도 영 향을 미쳐, 통제적․무관심 양육은 실패공포를 증가시키고, 민주적 양육은 이를 완화하는 보 호 요인으로 작용하는 것으로 확인되었다. 실패공포는 성장 마인드셋 형성을 저해하는 요인 으로 작용했으며, 매개효과 분석 결과, 부모의 양육태도가 실패공포를 조성하거나 완화하는 과정을 통해 간접적으로도 성장 마인드셋에 영향을 미친다는 점이 검증되었다. 본 연구는 부 모의 양육태도가 자녀의 성장 마인드셋 형성에 중요한 역할을 하며, 실패공포를 완화하는 부 모 교육 및 교육적 개입이 필요함을 시사한다. 또한, 부모와 교사가 결과보다는 노력과 과정 을 강조하는 피드백을 제공하여 자녀가 실패를 학습 과정의 일부로 받아들이고 도전적인 태 도를 형성하도록 돕는 것이 중요함을 강조한다.
