This paper attempts to scrutinize contemporary societal consumption issues through the lens of Mozi's ‘Theory of Frugality’ and endeavors to extrapolate pedagogical recommendations for the field of Education for Sustainable Development(ESD). Mozi censured the extravagant utilization of commodities surpassing their original utility, manifesting apprehension regarding the consequential toll on human lives and property. In response, he advocated the virtue of "frugality" and underscored the imperative of embracing "an ethos of universal benevolence coupled with the simultaneous reverence for the interests of all." This philosophical tenet espoused by Mozi exhibits a discernible nexus with the principles underpinning ESD. Primarily, Mozi's "Theory of Frugality" proffers substantive insights conducive to steering the trajectory of ESD education. This proposition emanates from the recognition that the amelioration of environmental predicaments necessitates an educational paradigm fostering cognizance and cultivating a judicious demeanor towards the intrinsic quandary of consumption. Secondly, Mozi's advocacy for "respect for everyone's interests" introduces a novel paradigm for comprehending human existence within the framework of sustainable development. This conception derives its significance from the imperativeness of accounting for the ecological legacy bestowed upon both the present and subsequent generations.

본고는 『묵자』의 ‘절용⋅절장론’을 통해 현대사회의 생산과 소비 문제를 분석하고, 이를 바탕으로 공동체에 대한 긍정적인 인식과 상호이익을 담보할 수 있는 '지속가능발전교육(ESD)'의 방향성에 대해 고찰하고자 한다. 묵자는 ‘절용⋅절장’을 통해 생산과 소비의 불균형과 바람직한 생산자 와 소비자의 모습에 대하여 논했으며 모두의 이익을 존중하면서 공동체 의 모든 구성원들을 두루 사랑하는 태도[兼愛⋅交利]’를 강조했다. 묵자 의 ‘절용’, ‘절장’, ‘겸애’, ‘교리’는 지속가능발전교육의 방향성에 중요한 시사점을 제공한다. 첫째, 환경문제를 해결하기 위해서는 생산과 소비의 근 본적인 문제에 대한 인식과 올바른 태도를 키우는 교육이 필요하다. 두 번째로, 묵자의 겸애와 교리는 지속 가능한 발전을 위한 인간의 삶에 대 한 새로운 시각을 제시한다. 공동체의 구성원들은 환경에 대한 공동체의식을 갖고 전지구적 차원에서 인류 공동의 문제를 해결해야 할 책무가 있 으며 이러한 의식을 일깨우고 실천을 촉구할 수 있는 핵심적인 방법은 교육이다. 마지막으로, 지속가능교육은 다 함께 각 개인의 이익을 추구하면 서도 환경을 보전하고 앞으로의 미래 세대를 생각하며 윤리적 소비 및 생산, 그리고 성찰과 실천을 공유하는 중요한 역할을 해야 한다.
