The purpose of this paper is to show that narrative imagination through literary works can be an art of moral deliberation. To this end, I will examine Dewey's concept of moral 'deliberation' in relation to Nussbaum's narrative imagination. Dewey argues that the morality of an act depends on deep and rich deliberation in a specific problem situation. The problem is that the deliberation lacks specificity. Dewey says that moral goodness can be revealed through deliberation in a situation, but he does not specifically describe how our deliberation can be inclusive, delicate, and rich without becoming narrow-minded or distorted in a specific situation. Dewey shows an optimistic belief that deliberation can be constrained or improved through scientific methods of experimentation and verification, and the education and democratic institutions that support them. However, these suggestions are somewhat abstract or formal to apply to specific situations, and there is a risk of privileging scientific discourse, contrary to Dewey's intention. Therefore, in this paper, I’ll propose narrative imagination as a methodology that can broaden and deepen the reflection of an agent in a moral dilemma without narrowing it down. I’ll argue that Nussbaum's narrative imagination can help prevent the deliberation from developing in a narrow way by allowing us to concretely imagine situations and take on various positions. Furthermore, I will show that such imagination is oriented toward democracy, and that moral deliberation based on narrative imagination is constrained by democratic values.

이 논문의 목적은 서사적 상상력이 도덕적 숙고의 기술이 될 수 있다는 점을 드러내는 것이다. 이를 위해 필자는 듀이의 ‘숙고’ 개념을 누스바움의 서사적 상상력과의 연관성 속에 서 조명할 것이다. 듀이는 행위의 도덕성이 도덕원리나 이상적 덕목에 따르는 데 있는 것이 아니라 문제상황에서 행위자의 깊고 풍부한 숙고에 달려있다고 주장한다. 문제는 구체적 상 황에서 우리의 숙고가“어떻게”편협해지지 않고, 포용적이며 풍부해질 수 있는지에 대해서 듀이가 구체적인 서술을 하지 않는다는 데 있다. 대신 듀이는 실험과 검증이라는 과학적 방 법과 그것을 지지하는 교육과 민주주의적인 제도를 통해 숙고가 제약되거나 개선될 수 있다 는 낙관적 믿음을 드러낸다. 그러나 듀이가 제안하는 숙고의 방법은 구체적인 상황에 적용 하기에 다소 추상적이거나 형식적이며 듀이의 의도와 달리 과학 담론을 특권화할 위험이 있 다. 이러한 문제에 대응하기 위해 이 논문은 도덕적 문제상황에서의 숙고가 편협해지지 않 고, 폭넓고 섬세해질 수 있는 하나의 방법론으로서 서사적 상상력을 제안한다. 필자는 문학 작품이 내포하는 서사적 상상력이 상황을 구체적으로 그려보고 다양한 입장들에 설 수 있도 록 함으로써, 도덕적 숙고가 편협하게 전개되지 않도록 도울 수 있다고 주장할 것이다. 나아 가 그와 같은 상상력은 민주주의를 지향하기 때문에 서사적 상상력에 의한 도덕적 숙고는 민주주의적 가치에 의해 제약된다는 점을 보일 것이다.
