This study aims to examine how cultural gene memes are formed at Walt Disney Animation Studios. For this purpose, we analyzed basic information about animation and explored the principles that Walt Disney Studios pursues in producing animations. In this process, the study focused on Mickey Mouse, the official mascot character that symbolizes Walt Disney Animation Studios. This is because we determined that Mickey Mouse represents a 'meme' formed by Walt Disney Animation Studios. As a result, we concluded that Walt Disney Animation Studios transmits cultural genes to creators by forming unrestricted and free Mickey Mouse 'memes'. Furthermore, through Walt Disney Animation Studios, we confirmed that cultural gene memes are not only formed from unique traditional cultures or regional cultures established in the past, but can be newly created at any time. Additionally, we found that the existing cultural genes present in Burbank, the city where Walt Disney Animation Studios is based and developed, could change as new cultural genes are formed.

본 연구는 월트 디즈니 애니메이션 스튜디오의 문화유전자 밈이 어떤 방식으로 형성되는가를 고찰하는데 목적은 둔다. 이를 위해 애니메이션에 대한 기본 정보를 파악하고, 월트 디즈니 스튜디오에서 애니메이션을 제작할 때 추구하는 원칙에 대해 살펴보았다. 그 과정 속에서 본 연구는 월트 디즈니 애니메이션 스튜디오를 상징하는 공식 마스크토 미키마우스 캐릭터에 주목하였다. 미키마우스가 월트 디즈니 애니메이션 스튜디오에서 형성한 ‘밈’이라고 판단했기 때문이다. 결과적으로 월트 디즈니 애니메이션 스튜디오에서는 형식의 제약을 받지 않고 자유로운 미키마 우스 ‘밈’을 형성하여 창작자들에게 문화유전자를 전달하고 있다는 결론에 도달했다. 나아가 문화유전자 밈은 고유 의 전통문화 혹은 과거부터 형성된 지역의 고유한 문화에서만 형성되는 것이 아니라, 언제든 새롭게 만들어질 수 있음을 월트 디즈니 애니메이션 스튜디오를 통해 확인하였다. 또한 월트 디즈니 애니메이션 스튜디오가 기반을 두고 발전한 버뱅크라는 도시에 자리하고 있던 기존의 문화유전자가 새로운 문화유전자가 형성됨에 따라 바뀔 수 있음을 파악했다.
