In its reception history, the herem texts have been used to justify social, political, and biological exclusion of the Other, perpetuating great injustice through exploitation and violence against them. Particularly, the interpretation of the Herem as a political act has been employed to justify interethnic violence and religious exclusivism in modern and contemporary contexts. Therefore, this study examines how herem transitioned from a divine command to a political act in its reception history and explores how religion is similarly appropriated politically in contemporary far-right nationalism. By doing so, it emphasizes the urgent need for ethical interpretation. Furthermore, through an ‘ethical’ analysis of the herem texts, this study proposes that missional communities in multicultural societies should interpret the Bible ethically, embracing the Other and promoting peace with them as a community of interpretation.

수용사 속에서 진멸 명령은 타자에 대한 사회적, 정치적, 그리고 생물학적 배제를 정당화하고 그들에 대한 착취와 폭력을 수행함으로써 큰 불의를 영속시켜 왔다. 특히 진멸 명령을 정치적 행위로 해석하는 방식은 근현대의 민족 간 폭력이나 종교적 배타성을 정당화하는 데 사용되었다. 따라서 본 연구는 진멸이 신성한 명령에서 어떻게 정치적 행위로 전환되었는지그 수용사를 살피고, 오늘날 극우 정치에서 이와 유사한 방식으로 종교가정치적으로 전유되는 방식을 고찰함으로써 그것의 윤리적 해석의 긴급성을 주장한다. 그런 다음 진멸 텍스트를 소위 ‘윤리적’으로 해석함으로써 다문화사회 속 선교적 공동체는 타자들을 포용하고 그들과의 평화를 증진하기 위해 성서를 윤리적으로 해석하는 해석의 공동체임을 제안한다.
