Since the 2000s, with the international community’s increasing emphasis on implementing the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the importance of fostering global citizenship awareness has become more prominent. This study aimed to empirically verify the effectiveness of global citizenship education (GCE) among college students, a group that has been relatively under-studied in existing GCE discourses. Using a Korean-translated Global Citizenship Scale, the study analyzed the impact of GCE on college students’ global citizenship awareness. The results showed that students who received GCE scored significantly higher in global citizenship awareness (B=9.009, p<.001). Also, female students (B=-4.208, p<.001) and students with overseas living experience (B=4.982, p<.01) showed significantly increased levels of global citizenship awareness. Subgroup analyses revealed that sub-factors including valuing diversity (B=3.758, p<.001), normative environment (B=2.332, p<.001), sustainability (B=1.044, p<.05), and global awareness (B=2.335, p<.001) all statistically increased with GCE. Based on these findings, the study reaffirms the necessity of GCE for college students and emphasizes the importance of designing curricula that focus on the sub-factors of global citizenship awareness. Furthermore, the positive impact of overseas living experience on global citizenship awareness suggests educational strategies to enhance multicultural acceptance and understanding.

2000년대 이후 UN이 채택한 새천년개발목표(MDGs)와 지속가능발전목표(SDGs)의 이행을 위한 국제 사회의 다각적인 노력이 강조됨에 따라, 세계시민의식 함양의 중요성이 더욱 부각되 었다. 본 연구는 기존 세계시민교육 담론에서 상대적으로 덜 연구된 대학생 집단을 대상으로 세 계시민교육의 효과를 실증적으로 검증하고자 하였다. 한국어로 번안된 세계시민의식 척도를 사 용하여 세계시민교육이 대학생들의 세계시민의식에 미치는 영향을 분석한 결과, 세계시민교육 을 받은 학생들의 세계시민의식 점수가 유의미하게 높은 것으로 나타났고(B=9.009, p<.001), 여학생(B=-4.208, p<.001)과 해외 거주 경험이 있는 학생(B=4.982, p<.01)의 세계시민의식 증가 수준이 유의미하게 높았다. 세계시민의식의 하위요인 별 분석 결과, 다양성 존중(B=3.758, p<.001), 규범적 환경(B=2.332, p<.001), 지속 가능성(B=1.044, p<.05), 글로벌 인식 (B=2.335, p<.001) 등 모든 하위 요인이 세계시민교육에 의해 통계적으로 유의미하게 증가한 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 연구 결과를 근거로 대학생을 대상으로 한 세계시민교육의 필요성을 재확인하며, 세계시민의식의 하위 요인에 주목한 교육 커리큘럼 구성의 필요성을 강조하였다. 또한, 해외 체류 경험이 세계시민의식에 긍정적 영향을 미친다는 결과를 바탕으로, 다문화 수용 성과 이해 증진을 위한 교육적 방안을 제언하였다.
