Lee Un-yeong's 『YoungMiPyen』 is a Yadam anthology written for the primary purpose of eliciting laughter. This paper aims to investigate the purpose of writing 『YoungMiPyen』 by focusing on the types of laughter and the methods of its implementation based on Lee Un-yeong's creative motivations. By doing so, this paper seeks to reveal the characteristics and value of 『YoungMiPyen』 through the lens of laughter while redefining Lee Un-yeong's identity as a writer, who has traditionally been recognized solely as a Gasa(lyric lines) writer. To achieve this, the phases of laughter in 『YoungMiPyen』 were analyzed, and the laughter embedded in the phases was categorized into three types. The findings are as follows: 『YoungMiPyen』 places significant emphasis on building unique and individualistic characters. Moreover, Lee Un-yeong's pursuit of “laughter for the sake of laughter,” rather than treating laughter as a means to an end, imbues the humor in 『YoungMiPyen』 with a refined and sophisticated quality. This aligns with the concept of Heiterkeit, characterized by enjoyment and wholesome laughter, and generates effective laughter even today. Consequently, 『YoungMiPyen』 expands the scope of classical Korean literature by offering diverse dimensions to Yadam in the late Joseon period, including the 18th century. Through this, it serves as an opportunity to reconsider preconceived notions about laughter in premodern times.

李運永이 편찬한 『영미편』 은 웃음을 목적으로 저술된 야담집이다. 이글에서는 이운영의 창작 동기에 따라 웃음의 유형과 그 구현방식에 주목하여 『영미편』 의 저술목적을 확인하고자 한다. 이를 통해 『영미편』 이 지닌 특징과 가치를 ‘웃음’이라는 틀을 통해 드러내는 동시에, 기존에 歌辭 작가로만 알려져 왔던 이운영의 작가상을 재정립하고자 한다. 이를 위해 『영미편』 웃음의 제양상을 검토하고, 그 속에 구현된 웃음을 3가지로 유형화하여 살펴보았다. 그 결과 확인된 『영미편』 에 나타난 웃음 유형과 구현방식의 특징은 다음과 같다. 『영미편』의 웃음은 개성적인 캐릭터 구축에 주안점을 두었다. 또한, 웃음을 수단이 아닌 목적으로 삼아 ‘웃음을 위한 웃음’을 추구한 이운영의 작가적 태도는 『영미편』 의 웃음이 한층 세련된 면모를 지니게 하였다. 이는 결국 재미와 건강한 웃음으로 대표되는 ‘명랑성(Heiterkeit)’과도 상통하여 지금도 유효할 수 있는 웃음을 만들어 내었다. 이운영은 당시의 시대 흐름과는 어느 정도 거리가 있는 자신만의 작품세계를 설정하고 추구하였기에 『영미편』 의 웃음은 한문학 서사 전통의 자장 속에 있는 해학과 풍자로만 한정해서 설명할 수 없는 다채로운 웃음의 양상을 보여준다. 따라서 『영미편』 은 18세기뿐 아니라 조선후기 야담에 다양한 결을 제공함으로써 한문학의 외연을 확장하고, 이를 통해 전근대 웃음에 대한 선입견을 재고하는 계기가 될 수 있다는 점에서 의의를 지닌다.
