This study aims to explore the self-reliance processes and experiences of young adults who have aged out of child care facilities more than five years ago. To achieve this, in-depth interviews were conducted with a total of five self-reliant young adults, and the data were analyzed using a qualitative case study methodology. The analysis categorized the findings into three time periods: the initial five years after leaving care during which formal support was provided, the period after five years, and future plans. Based on these findings, the study highlights the need for support in job stability, housing assistance, and the establishment of mentoring systems to provide psychological and emotional support for care leavers.

본 논문은 아동양육시설에서 퇴소한 후 5년 이상이 지난 자립준비청년의 자립 과정과 경험을 탐색하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 총 5명의 자립준비청년을 대상으로 심층 면접을 진행하였고, 질적 사례연구방법을 통해 분석을 실시하였다. 그 결과 연구에 참여한 자립준비청년은 퇴소 후 다양한 경로로 자신만의 자립을 시작하였으나 예상치 못한 경제적, 심리적, 사회적 어려움을 경험하였다. 이 때 공공 및 민간의 지원사업에 참여하며 자립 기반을 강화 할 수 있었다. 이후 공적인 지원이 종료된 참여자들은 경제적, 심리적, 사회적 성장을 해나가고 있었고, 직업생활 에서 안정성을 확보하고 내면의 역량을 강화하였으며 후배들에게 기여하고자 하는 활동을 하고 있었다. 미래의 계 획으로 대학원 진학, 결혼 등 구체적인 계획을 구상하였나, 주거 안정에 있어서는 현실적인 어려움을 경험하고 있 었다. 이를 통해 자립준비청년의 직장 안정을 위한 지원과 주거 지원, 심리정서적 지지체계를 확보하기 위한 멘토 링 등에 대한 내용의 필요성을 제시하였다.
