This study aims to comprehensively explore the trends and plans, various research results, and issues of the major autonomy selection system (‘Undeclared Major’ System), which has recently led to many changes in domestic universities, and to discuss future considerations. Recently, each university has been making various moves, such as newly establishing or significantly expanding the quota of undeclared majors in line with the government’s financial support projects. The undeclared major system is intended to strengthen students’right to choose by allowing them to explore and design their aptitudes, interests, majors, and career paths in various ways, while also fostering convergent talents required in a rapidly changing era. This is important in that it serves as an educational venue that helps students confirm their own uniqueness and diversity and diversify the stage of their thoughts and activities while crossing academic boundaries. In this study, I aimed to present relatively recent trends and issues in the undeclared major field that reflect more undated or confirmed content than the early 2024 point in time. It is no exammeration to say that the undeclared major system has become one of the biggest educational issues in 2024, its development is rapidly taking place, being organized, and being finalized. For this study, I collected relevant academic materials and articles that could be searched and researched as of July-August 2024, and presented realistic considerations, conclusions, and discussions. Based on this study, I will be able to share the key trends and issues related to the undeclared major system that have been discussed and implemented to date, and gather the necessary information for this system to be well-established at each university, which will help each university create its own unique educational model.

본 연구에서는 최근 국내 대학에서 많은 변화를 이끌고 있는 전공자율선택제(‘무전공’제도)의 동향과 계획, 각종 조사 내용, 쟁점을 종합적으로 탐색하고 향후 고려사항 등을 논의하고자 한다. 최근 각 대학에서는 정부의 재정지원사업에 발맞추어 무전공제 의 정원을 새롭게 마련하거나 대폭 확대하는 등 다양한 움직임을 보이고 있다. 무전공 제도는 학생들이 자신의 적성과 흥미, 전공과 진로를 다양하게 탐색, 설계하도록 하는 등 학생 선택권을 강화하는 동시에, 급변하는 시대에 요구되는 융복합 인재를 양성하 기 위한 것이다. 이는 학생들이 각자의 고유함과 다양성을 확인하고 학문의 경계를 넘 나들면서 사고와 활동의 무대를 다변화하도록 돕는 교육의 장이 된다는 점에서 중요하 다. 본 연구에서는 최근 시점을 중심으로 무전공에 있어 2024년 초반 시점보다 더 업데 이트되거나 확정된 내용을 반영한 비교적 최신의 동향과 쟁점을 제시하고자 하였다. 무전공 제도는 2024년 들어 최대의 교육 이슈 중 하나가 되었고 그 전개가 급속하게 이 루어지고 정리, 확정되고 있다고 해도 과언이 아니다. 본 연구를 위해 2024년 7~8월을 기준으로 조사, 검색을 하여 관련 학술 자료와 기사 등의 내용들을 수렴, 정리하고 현실 적인 고려사항 및 결론 및 논의 등을 제시하였다. 본 연구를 토대로 현 시점까지 진행 되고 논의되어 온 무전공 제도 관련 주요 동향과 쟁점을 공유하고 이 제도가 대학별로 잘 안착하는 데 필요한 사항들을 수렴하여 각 대학의 고유한 교육 모델을 만들어 나가 는 데 도움을 얻을 수 있을 것이다.
