This study analyzed the relationship between traumatic event experience, emotional exhaustion, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in a sample of maritime police officers and tested whether emotional exhaustion has a mediating effect between traumatic events and PTSD. The results showed that traumatic events were significantly and positively related to emotional exhaustion and PTSD, and that the longer the duration of service in the Coast Guard, the higher the likelihood of experiencing PTSD due to frequent exposure to traumatic events. However, emotional exhaustion was not significantly related to duration of service. Traumatic events had a positive effect on emotional exhaustion and PTSD, and emotional exhaustion partially mediated this relationship. This suggests that if Coast Guard officers who have experienced a trauma case suffer from emotional exhaustion, the likelihood of PTSD is higher. This study emphasizes the need to systematically manage the mental health of Coast Guard officers and manage job stress, including emotional burnout, to prevent PTSD. It is also of academic significance because there is a lack of research on the impact of PTSD on job-related variables in high-risk occupations.

본 연구는 해양경찰공무원을 대상으로 외상 사건 경험, 정서적 소진, 외상 후 스트레스 장애(PTSD) 간의 관계를 분석하고, 정서적 소진이 외상 사건과 PTSD 간의 매개 효과를 가지는지 검증하였다. 외상 사건은 정서적 소진과 PTSD에 유의미한 정적 상관관계를 가지며, 해양경찰 근무 기간이 길수록 외상 사건에 빈번히 노출되어 PTSD를 경험할 가능성이 높아지 는 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 정서적 소진은 근무 기간과 큰 연관이 없었다. 외상 사 건은 정서적 소진과 PTSD에 정적 영향을 미쳤고, 정서적 소진은 이 관계를 부분적 으로 매개하는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 외상 사건을 경험한 해양경찰이 정서적 소진 을 겪을 경우 PTSD 발생 가능성이 더 높아진다는 것을 의미한다. 본 연구는 해양경찰공무원의 정신 건강을 체계적으로 관리하고, PTSD 예방을 위 해 정서적 소진을 포함한 직무 스트레스 관리의 필요성을 강조하였다. 또한, 고위험 직군에서의 PTSD가 직무 관련 변수에 미치는 영향을 다룬 연구가 부족하다는 점에 서 학문적 의미가 있다.
