This essay is a critical examination of postcolonial discourse and postcolonial theology, particularly practical theology, which was actively discussed in the 1980s and 1990s. This essay, which is primarily a literature review, first examines the origins and development of postcolonial discourse, focusing on key concepts such as Edward Said's Orientalism, Homi Bhabha's hybridity and ambivalence, third space, and Gayatri Spivak's subaltern concept. The essay then examines postcolonial biblical criticism by R. S. Sugirtarajah, as well as postcolonial feminist theology based on the critical dialogue between postcolonial discourse and third world feminism, as presented by Namsoon Kang. Drawing on these discussions, the essay examines three themes in postcolonial practical theology, including baptism oriented toward hybridity and third space, intercultural pastoral counseling as liberating practice, and practice of interdependence as unlearning independence. Finally, the essay proposes the tasks of Christian education as postcolonial practical theology.
