The purpose of this study is to contrastively analyze the use of the Korean motion verbs ‘kada’ and ‘oda’ and their counterparts in Shona and English for purposes of Korean language education. A discourse completion task(DCT) questionnaire based on the analytical framework proposed by Nakazawa was used on 15 native speakers from each of these three languages, and respondents were prompted to complete dialogues using forms of ‘kada’ and ‘oda’. The results show that while there are many similarities in the use of these verbs in the three languages, there are also some significant differences that depend on how each language treats the deictic center (reference point), the psychological distance, and the agent and goal of motion. Differences can also be observed depending on the goal of motion with English and Shona being more sensitive to the home-base of a speech acts participant, and also being more prone to shifting the deictic center from one speech acts participant to the other than Korean.
