Like so many people in the world, the church congregation members are breathing heavily as they struggle through their daily lives. While we teach that faith is what sustains us, we also need an empathic relationship that genuinely cares about the daily struggles. The church has emphasized the absolute meaning of faith, but faith is an awareness of God as its object and content, and a personal relationship. Therefore, it cannot be overlooked that the worship as the confession of faith must be built on an empathic relationship with God. This study is in line with my previously published work on empathic homiletics. It is not preferentially motivated by an academic need, but by an ordinary need experienced in the general pastoral context. It seeks to affirm that worship, which is at the heart of Christian life, can be a place where empathy for God and empathy with God can be experienced and shared, as well as a site of renewal and growth where empathy for one another is created among members of the worshipping community. This study connects the hard life where empathy is needed with the theological understanding of Holy Saturday. In particular, it draws attention to the similarity of the human liminality of death in the life cycle to the everyday life of pain and suffering. Thus, along with the existential weight of human physical death, the theme of considering various daily sufferings as ‘little deaths’ and the challenge of such various deaths is encountered in the worship of Holy Saturday. We come to understand the place of worship as a threshold to cross over to a new boundary and a place of recovery through empathy. In this way, through empathic worship on Holy Saturday, we will explore the possibility of understanding the life of various trials and looking beyond to life in hope.

수많은 세상의 사람들이 그러하듯 오늘도 교회의 성도들은 힘겨운 일상속을 거친 숨 몰아쉬며 분주히 달려간다. 믿음을 가졌기에 버틸 수 있 다고 가르치지만, 그 힘겨움의 하루하루를 진심으로 살피는 공감적 관계성 역시 필요하다. 교회 공동체는 믿음이 가지는 절대적 의미를 강조해왔지만 믿음은 그 대상이요 내용으로의 하나님에 대한 인식이며 인격적 관계를 의 미한다. 그러하기에 믿음의 고백이요, 믿음으로 경배하는 예배는 하나님과의 공감적 관계 안에 세워져 가야 함을 간과할 수 없다. 본 연구는 필자가 발표한 공감적 설교학에 관한 연구와 맥을 같이 한 다. 학문적 요구에서부터 시작되었다기보다 일반 목회 현장에서 경험한 보 편적 필요로부터 시작된다. 기독교 신앙생활의 근간이라 할 수 있는 예배 의 자리가 하나님의 공감과 하나님을 향한 공감이 경험되고 나눠질 뿐만 아니라, 함께하는 예배 공동체 구성원들 서로 간의 공감이 만들어가는 새 로운 회복과 성장의 현장이 될 수 있음을 확인해가고자 함이다. 본 연구는 공감이 필요한 힘겨운 일상의 자리를 성토요일(Holy Saturday)의 신학적 이해와 연결시킨다. 그리고 특별히 인생의 주기 속에서 ‘죽음’이 갖는 인간 적 한계성이 고난의 일상과 유사함에 주목한다. 그렇게 인간의 육신적 죽 음이 주는 실존적 무게감과 더불어 일상 속의 다양한 시련을 ‘작은 죽음’으 로 이해하고, 그러한 다양한 죽음이 가지는 도전이라는 주제를 성토요일의 예배와 조우시킨다. 다양한 일상의 힘겨움을 안고 나아온 예배의 자리를 새로운 경계로 넘어서는 문지방(threshold)으로, 공감을 통한 회복의 자리 로 이해하게 된다. 그렇게 성토요일 공감적 예배를 통해 다양한 시련의 인 생과 그 너머를 새롭게 이해하고 바라보는 가능성을 살피고자 한다.
